Summary

The first rule of Sunday Lunch Club is … don't make any afternoon plans.

Every few Sundays, Anna and her extended family and friends get together for lunch. They talk, they laugh, they bicker, they eat too much. Sometimes the important stuff is left unsaid, other times it's said in the wrong way.

Sitting between her ex-husband and her new lover, Anna is coming to terms with an unexpected pregnancy at the age of forty. Also at the table are her ageing grandmother, her promiscuous sister, her flamboyantly gay brother and a memory too terrible to contemplate.

Until, that is, a letter arrives from the person Anna scarred all those years ago. Can Anna reconcile her painful past with her uncertain future?

Juliet Ashton weaves a story of love, friendship and community that will move you to laughter and to tears. Think Cold Feet meets David Nicholls, with a dash of the joy of Jill Mansell added for good measure.

Heartwarming

slow start and a bit gossipy. Improves with a brilliant and heartwarming ending worth listening to.

A Big Surprise

I bought this book as the Audible book of the day. I was very unsure whether it was suitable for a divorced 71 year old guy!

I settled in to the book after the first twenty minutes and was enchanted by the simple story and the excellent writing. I ended up feeling great warmth for Anna - a sister I would have loved to have.

A touching and brilliant portrayal of a modern family.

A lovely family saga

Every kind of human emotion is covered here. A lovely tale of family life, with all its ups and downs and emotional problems. I really enjoyed the story and the narrator

Liked the narration the story was predictable

There couldn't be more of issues crammed into one story. From divorce single parenthood casual sex, teenage pregnancy transgender rec, gay marriage, gay cuple adoption, pregnancy, reconciliation with abandoned child, aging, care home, even rescue puppies.... it's just soo much

An Enjoyable Listen

This audiobook was a pleasant, well narrated story. I felt the characters were well developed and I was keen to find out how things were going to work out for all the family members. Yes, it could be a bit twee at times but if you are looking for an enjoyable, easy listen then this audiobook could be the right one.

Slow Start - Stick With It!

I’ve not ever read a book like this one. The best way to ‘almost’ describe it, is an extended, detailed, intimate, eating Royle Family! If you’re British, you’ll know exactly what I mean! It’s not as hilariously funny, but it’s dysfunctional family life done well.

I think that the only character that I really didn’t warm to, was Maeve, the younger sister, can’t say why though... !

A feel good story

A feel good book with a mixture of sadness and joy. The characters so well written and believable. And got you immersed in their lives.

Just lovely

A real bit of escapism. A different way of documenting the dynamic of a modern family.
