About this listen

Shetland: a place of sheep and soil, close ties and an age-old way of life. A place where David has lived all his life, like his father and grandfather before him. A place where Sandy, a newcomer but already a crofter, may have finally found a home. A place that Alice has fled to after the death of her husband. In the wind and sun and storms from the Atlantic, these islanders must decide: what is left of us when the day's work is done, the children grown, and all our choices have been made?

Wonderful!

I enjoyed every moment of this story and although I’ve never been to Shetland I could literally picture the valley and it’s inhabitants. The narration was clear, almost soothing, and the dialect delightful.

Fabulous combination of story and narration.

I love this book. I’ve listened to it three times now. The combination of story and narrator makes it feel like I’m listening to a long and beautiful song with a gentle tune. I first heard it serialised on Radio 4 read by the actor who plays Sandy in the Shetland TV series, he was also a beautiful narrator; but I’m glad I decided to listen to the full book as well.

Great to hear the Shetland dialect

Good characters, good description of a supportive isolated community and of the work on a croft. A sorry of healing for many of the characters but not romanticised.

A great listen

I loved the characters who were brought to life by the calming accent of the narrator. Set in Shetland, I was transported there by the descriptions. The plot was simple and relatable.
