Summary

Gunmen are terrorising young women in the Cathedral town of Lafferton. What - if anything - links the apparently random murders? Is the marksman with a rifle the same person as the killer with a handgun?

Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Serrailler falls back on well tried police methods such as questioning neighbours and house-to-house searches. Simon has been promoted and is now with the Serious Incident Flying Taskforce, but he is still at heart a loner and these chilly murders are on his home territory.

Good solid Susan Hill and Steven Pacey

A good heart strong puller although not heavy on intrigue or plot twists. Excellent reading by SP

Too much “bible bashing”

How many clergy and “bible bashing” can be fitted into one book. Bit odd for this type of book. A lot of characters who don’t add to to the story and wouldn’t be missed if they were removed.

Another excellent book.

Excellent narration again. Story line was very was excellent if a slightly disturbing topic. The family backdrop and drama there were the usual mix of uplifting well thought out and in this case sad and dramatic too. I love the way the stories interlace with the family narrative continuing from book to book but a new case each time with all the twists and turns you come to expect from this author.
The narration is brilliant and I look forward the next book.

Susan Hill at her best again

Another great Simon Serrailer story. Susan Hill creates such great characters that it's a joy to get to know them better with each book. She writes fantastic dialogue which Stephen Pacey narrates quite beautifully.

I really enjoyed the book.

enjoyed this book

the charecters in this book are now familiar and interesting. the plot was a little bit obvious but it pulled you into the story and the characters were well formed.
A story of love and loss in the life of the town. yss it fits the accusation of being very 'middle class' . But i enjoy the comfort of the familiar families as they develop.
i will be continuing to read the series its familuarity does not dertract from the plot. you know what to expect, quality writing, a bit old fashioned now but a pleasant change from the fast paced gory books that leave you worn out and uncomfortable. the crime scenes dont kneed embellishments, the writers abilty to trust you as a reader to use your own imagination is part of the charm of the character of the book. not goodc writer and i know what to expect. a well written thoughtful book that i can relax and enjoy. not everyone wants to be challenged and left nerves jangling. a book that after a hectic day i can sit back and relax, knowing the quantity of the writing will carry it through.
i will continue with the series.

Very moving episode in Simon's life

loved it, thrilling at the same time as being an emotional chapter in the Suraillier's story
