Summary

Winner of the Exeter Novel Prize

Alone in the world, Elspeth Swansome has taken the position of nanny to a family on the remote Scottish island of Skelthsea.

Her charge, Mary, is a strange child. Distracted and secretive, she hasn't uttered a word since the sudden death of her twin, William - just days after their former nanny disappeared.

With her charge defiantly silent, Elspeth turns to the islanders. But no one will speak of what happened to William.

Just as no one can explain the hypnotic lullabies sung in empty corridors.

Nor the strange dolls that appear in abandoned rooms.

Nor the faint whistling that comes in the night....

As winter draws in and passage to the mainland becomes impossible, Elspeth finds herself trapped.

But is this house haunted by the ghosts of the past?

Or the secrets of the living?

Chilling, twisty and emotionally gripping, The Whistling is an atmospheric pause-resister with shades of the classics, yet a unique character of its own. Perfect for fans of Susan Hill and Laura Purcell.

Good start, slows down

Has its moments, but starts to drag and eventually it just begins to repeat itself and lose all meaning. Still, if you're into old fashioned gothic horror, this is for you!

Atmospheric

Absolutely loved it. It’s definitely a slow-burn, but it’s creepy and you can feel the chill of the sea fret thanks to the wonderful narrator.

Good story, poorly edited.

An engaging story but I had to give up because I use audio books at night to drift off to sleep. No chance with this one as the narration goes from almost inaudibly soft to jarringly loud on commencing each chapter. I was constantly on the volume button. It's such a shame as the narrator had a pleasant voice. Quite a few books do this I find.

Struggled with changing pitch of narrator’s voice

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but my listening experience was marred by the frequently changing pitch of the narrator’s voice.

Lois Chimimba is an excellent narrator, but I found when she lowered her pitch for effect, I was unable to hear the narration.

Even turning up the device volume did not help me to follow the narration when the pitch was very low - which happened frequently during the book.

So unfortunately I haven’t been able to follow this audiobook properly - simply because of the varying pitch of the narrator’s voice.

I would like to point out that I do have a hearing problem, so this may not be something that applies to all listeners. But any listeners who rely on hearing aids or who are generally hard of hearing, may struggle with this audiobook.

At last a proper ghost story

Beautiful narration that wrapped around you and kept the story alive . Would love to see this adapted for the big screen.

Beautifully written, brilliantly narrated

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Some beautiful writing but made by the narration. While aspects have been done before (such is the way with ghost stories) there were some brilliant aspects, the widow’s whistle is a great concoction. The setting was made real by the descriptions and the characters were given individuality and carried depth. Highly recommended!

Too many characters, didn't grab me

Just couldn't get into this. Tried and tried. All seemed so bleak and never really went anywhere. Narration was great. Just did f like the story.
