About this listen

NYT and USA Today best-selling author! Nominated for the prestigious romance Rita award!

John Fitzhugh Wyckerly has been the spare heir all his life, supporting himself with gambling and charm. The news that he's inherited the bankrupt title of earl of Danecroft shatters his indolent world. Even penniless, he's always paid his debts, but now the estate's creditors are closing in. He can fake his death and run for cover or accept overwhelming responsibility and find a rich wife - one who will also accept his illegitimate terror of a daughter.

On his way to find an heiress, he meets Abigail Merriweather, who is neither rich nor aristocratic, but she can tame The Terror and stomp cockroaches. Unfortunately she needs a wealthy, powerful man who will fight her father's executor and retrieve her four half siblings. When an unexpected inheritance falls into Abby's lap, she sets out for London to seek a lawyer.

Can Fitz charm his practical Abby into trusting him to save her siblings when it's doubtful that he can even save himself? And can Abby surrender reason and logic for the folly of love offered by a man who can have any woman he wants but insists he wants only her?

"Rice is a master storyteller. A wonderful blend of humor, pathos, adventure, and charm, this page-turner is book one in Rice's promising Rebellious Sons series." (Shelley Mosley, Booklist)

The Wyked and the Saint

The first few pages turn and sow the seeds of interest and intrigue , 2nd chapter draws the reader further in, the web spun to draw you into the plots twists and turning story, the characters, equally gathered or garnered, a captivating woven tapestry. Thoroughly enjoyed, thoroughly recommended and I hope that you find this to your pleasure as well.

Fun story. Dubious narration

I enjoyed the story but the narration really is patchy. I did just end up laughing at it. Quite a few glaring americanisms for a story set in regency England but they were fairly easy to ignore or laugh off too. Maybe not for you if you wouldn’t be able to though

Charming characters

Everyone was v likeable, and the heroes had believable chemistry. Will def check out more from this author. The narrator was pretty good but without doing different voices, though she did diff accents, it lacked a certain something

l loved this story and admired how the hero + heroine found their way to each other, given the huge obstacles in their way. Great Stuff !

Love story

Slow to start and easy to have on in the background, the love story was really sweet. Unsure about the narration like others have said but you do get used to it. Think I’ll give the rest in the series a go

No complaints

If you’ve read through most of the reviews, you’ll be contemplating on whether to listen to this tale.

The answer, from my perspective, is ‘Yes’. The story is a good one. Nothing incredulous and nothing offensive about how literary ‘strong females’ are portrayed. This strikes a believable balance. A satisfying journey that I consumed in one sitting.

Most of the detractors are about the narration, that the accents were wrong and many words were pronounced incorrectly. I only heard one incorrect pronunciation: Gig. I was amused by it, but the word was only used twice and it was nowhere near so daunting as to spoil the whole story!

I would advise prospective listeners to try the sample before committing yourself, but to be fair, this is a lovely light journey down ‘The Younger Son’ route of Regency England and life between 2 classes. Don’t tie yourself up in knots with the narration - I can assure you that there is far worse out there (as well as much better), but this isn’t a deal breaker!

Narrator

I really struggled with the narrator's accent. Not a native Brit. Was it not possible to get an out of work British actor in the US?

Narrator's accents wander all over

Bits of USA, upper class then rural. And too many mispronounced words. I gave up.

Let down by the awful narration

To be honest, I do not quite know how I would have rated the story if the narration would have been better, but maybe then I would have noticed americanisms in der text more, I am not totally sure if it was only the narrator or the wording was off too.

What I do know is that I only finished it because it was in the Plus catalogue. Otherwise I would have stopped and returned it.

But it might fare better with a better narrator.
