Summary

Contains two stand-alone books from Benedict Patrick’s Yarnsworld series.

Series can be listened to in any order.

They Mostly Come out at Night, book one

The villagers of the forest seal themselves in their cellars at night, whispering folktales to each other about the monsters that prey on them in the dark. Only the Magpie King, their shadowy, unseen protector, can keep them safe.

However, when an outcast called Lonan begins to dream of the Magpie King’s defeat at the hands of inhuman invaders, this young man must do what he can to protect his village. He is the only person who can keep his loved ones from being stolen away after dark, and to do so he will have to convince them to trust him again.

From the Shadows of the Owl Queen's Court, book four

If you value your life, stay out of the forest. As a captive of the Owl Queen’s Court, Nascha’s life has always been one knife’s edge away from disaster. But when she is threatened for nothing more than the color of her hair, Nascha attempts the unthinkable: an escape through the dreaded Magpie King’s forest.

Hunted by sharp-toothed and sharper-witted foxfolk and hated by all for being a witch, Nascha fears herself doomed until she joins forces with a mysterious young man. With him she finds a glimmer of hope, even as her own unpredictable powers flicker into existence.

But hope is fleeting. The forces arrayed against her are insurmountable, and Nascha soon comes to realize that pursuit of her own freedom will come at a greater cost to the forest. As the darkness closes in around them, Nascha is forced to ask: At what price is she willing to purchase her life? How dearly is she willing to sell it?

Includes a special note from the author.

Brilliant

The story is really well written. It sets a good pace that builds to a crescendo. It's great to have a series of books that are stand alone, at the same time reference each other but not to the point where it is prohibitive if the other books haven't been read.

I particularly like the inclusion of stories that delve into the lore and mythology of the world within the books. It adds a nice change of pace but also adds depth.

This series is very well narrated and I shall definitely be looking out for more books read by Derek.

I cannot rate this series of books and it's narration high enough.

Great stories!

I really enjoyed these audiobooks. I love that there is a bit of fantasy mixed with real life and real emotions from the characters that i can relate to. There were twists and turns in both stories that kept me engaged. I found them easy to follow but with enough substance to keep me running along with the story. At first I thought the narrator was a bit monotonous, however by a few minutes in I'd tuned into his way of reading and found him wonderful to listen to!

best thing I've read since ....

best thing I've read (heard) since Patrick Rothfuss left us hanging for a decade. absolutely class. original, yet ringing with truths of myth . immaculate storytelling. If only there were more. .. ... wait.

Tale telling at it's best.

An unusual style of story telling, yet totally satisfying. The interweaving back and forth if dreams to reality, the folk tales perfectly placed.
I have one gripe, the out of place F bomb near the end of the story. It seemed unneeded. It fitted where it was placed but so out of the blue for the character saying it.

Good different

I really enjoyed both books. Particularly all the folk stories and their interaction with the main story line.

Very entertaining with a feeling of depth

I really enjoyed these stories, particularly book 1. The story and characters were interesting and the frequent injections of folklore throughout both stories really have a feeling of a thoroughly well thought out world with real depth. It's convinced me to listen to more of the Yarnsworld books.
