Didn't do it for me.

There is nothing at all wrong with either the book or the narration (which was really very good). Maybe a question of personal taste but it seems this classic has aged beyond my ability to really engage. It is very much "of an era" and undoubtedly deserving of it's reputation but, sadly, not my cup of tea in the end.

Jerome and Jarvis

Combine the wit and lazy day descriptiveness of Jerome K Jerome with the mellifluous Martin Jarvis and you have the perfect recipe for the ultimate escape. Close your eyes and you are the fourth man (not including the dog) in the boat wending your way along the Thames, traveling at a more tranquil time and at a slower pace than is allowed today. Simply wonderful.

One dog in a boat - forgetting the men

Don’t worry this isn’t a feminist review! I was transported back in time and space by Martin Jarvis’s excellent narration and humour. I did my best to ignore the chauvinism and classism and just roll with it. It was nominated for a book group and good to revisit after sixty years. MJ is excellent

A gentle, humorous and enjoyable read

Written with a wit and dry humour that is still fresh today, I thoroughly enjoyed this gentle story. The book relies on the humorous telling of every day events in the 1890's and so is very much "of a time", which, in my opinion, Martin Jarvis captures perfectly.
I have read that the book was originally meant to be a serious guide to the journey taken - mentioning the scenery, historic landmarks and recommending pubs, however, they ended up taking very much a back seat to the side stories of the passengers and their hapless exploits.

Just brilliant

This is a sublime novel; funny and informative whilst getting on with the job of telling a great story of the characters on their little adventure. I have listened to this at least 5 times now and will do many more times... if you like a bit of humour in a book, try this one... almost PGWodehouse levels of greatness.

Chapters muddling

The chapters of the recording don't correspond with the book chapters which makes it confusing to check where you are.
