Summary

Apocalypse: Disorder and chaos ravage London when thousands are contaminated by the accidental discharge of an experimental bioweapon. The disease robs its hosts of rational thought, giving them a singular desire - find more living flesh to infect.

Aftermath: Peter, alone by choice and oddly thriving, finds himself suddenly responsible for the life of someone other than himself. Elsewhere, other survivors stake their own claims to land and resources, but the inexplicable swarms of undead threaten to gather and dissipate constantly.

Abandoned: The virus spreads to every corner of the country while the combined forces of the naval fleet set sail for deeper waters and leave the UK to its fate. The few groups that remain are separated after a fateful battle for England, left to their own devices.

Adversity: As if flesh-hungry zombies weren't enough, a harsh winter strikes.

Adaptation: The apocalypse continues in the penultimate chapter of the Toy Soldiers series. Will anybody make it out alive?

Annihilation: Fleeing the seemingly unstoppable enemy, the survivors pin their hopes on a final attempt for freedom, but that means they must turn their backs on their home forever.

absolutely brilliant. rollercoaster ride of action, made all the better for being set in the UK. I just can't speak highly enough of the author.

Highly Commended

If you liked the Mountain Man series narrated by the superlative RC Bray then you are in for a real treat!
I searched for something suitable as a replacement read as I had listened to the whole series and saved this book in my library for a few months.
Although narrated by the sublime John Lee I just couldn’t give it a start - what a wasted few months they were, from the starting chapter it takes you and quite simply listened to it with every bit of free time available.
With a slightly different slant - with a more militarily base and with less visceral gore than MM it is nonetheless just as powerfully written by the excellent Devon C Ford if not better in detail.
I commend this series wholeheartedly to you the listener…

The Read Undead

This is an exceptionally good book! It transports you into the action of a fast paced story with great characterisations portraying the bleakness of a world lost to pandemic disease and cannibalism. I picked this up as it was on offer for free expecting the usual tropes in tales of this type. It offers more humanity than you would predict when dealing with the atavism of the human condition and yet keeps the narrative moving at pace. It is reminiscent of most other zombie apocalypse type literature and film and yet does offer other perspectives on the genre and was infinitely enhanced by John Lee’s performance. It was an enjoyable listen and I will definitely seek out other titles by this author.

Truly sad when series came to an end

Realistic and endearing characters that I could empathise with and feel part of their journey.

Being British and listening to an end of the world type book set in Britain, with British culture with British narrator made me feel more connected to the story. Most genres hail from America and I sometimes struggle with the nuances and accents. Therefore this book was amazing as I loved the humour, the tempered down emotions and that not everything was a cliff hanger.

Showing my age, I grew up tin the 1980s for it was nostalgic revisiting the era and my formative memories. The author did well in recapturing that decade.

Toy Soldiers is brilliant and even if the zombie genre is not for you, this book may be for you. It’s much more than ‘see zombie, shoot, run and repeat’. It’s a story of survival, friendship, trust, relationships, leadership and fear.

If in doubt about reading this, there is no doubt, just buy it and enjoy the story.

An intelligent zombie series

I hate Zombie books usually but my husband suggested it, so I listened and was glad I had. So many of these type of books is just blood, gore and endless names of gun types. There is all that in these books but it is secondary to the character progression and realistic (well as realist as you can be in a zombie novel!) plot. Well worth listening to. And it is very, very British in its understatement! Loved these books 💖

A must read

If you’re like me and a bit of geek for all things eighties, then you’ll absolutely love this book. I’m still shocked at all the historically accurate gear and equipment the characters use. The book itself is thrilling, chilling and exciting. I definitely recommend it.
