About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This audiobook contains exclusive bonus content between Drs Chris and Xand van Tulleken, where they deep-dive into what you've just listened to at the end of each part.

An eye-opening investigation into the science, economics, history and production of ultra-processed food.

It's not you, it's the food.

We have entered a new 'age of eating' where most of our calories come from an entirely novel set of substances called Ultra-Processed Food, food which is industrially processed and designed and marketed to be addictive. But do we really know what it's doing to our bodies?

Join Chris in his travels through the world of food science and a UPF diet to discover what's really going on. Find out why exercise and willpower can't save us, and what UPF is really doing to our bodies, our health, our weight, and the planet (hint: nothing good).

For too long we've been told we just need to make different choices, when really we're living in a food environment that makes it nigh-on impossible. So this is a book about our rights. The right to know what we eat and what it does to our bodies and the right to good, affordable food.

I couldn’t put this down…

I remember the documentary Chris did, which successfully put me off a lot of what I would have called “convenience food”. The book has helped me understand better the science underlying why UPF is problematic.

I’ve always felt a degree of suspicion about food when I don’t know what has gone into it and now I know what to look for on labels and what to avoid. Making food yourself gives you insight into what goes in in terms of fat, salt and sugar and helps make healthy choices.

The main thing I take away is a sense of time spent preparing and cooking food is time well invested.

A life changing book

Like many people who try to eat healthily I thought ultra processed food was something other people ate. This book exposes the truth about UPF not just it’s impact on health but also the politics of the food industry and its impact in the planet and culture. I lost count of how many times I was shocked and amazed by the story of UPF. This has been so well researched. The author and his brother share their own struggles with UPF.which I could relate to and I really appreciated their honesty. After thirty years of being vegetarian, ate butter avoided anything low fat etc I became a vegan just over two years ago which I now realise because of this book is a gift for UPF. I am now doing what I can to avoid UPF and have started with supermarket bread and I’m making my own. Brilliant book. Thank you, as I said. Life changing.

A ‘must read’ for everyone….

When you thought you were on top of your nutrition…. This book came along and put it all into perspective. I’m so glad I had it as an audio book too, lots of chemicals I would not know where to start with pronouncing!

Humourous, worrying, eye-opening…

A very interesting and comprehensive explanation about how UPF is affecting our population. A saddening but much needed explanation of how the food industry and economy means diets are so pre-determined and linked to income/poverty.
I liked how clearly the explanation of UPF food was broken down in this book, particularly the act of processing itself as well as particular added ingredients. I hadn’t understood this before.
Everything was very well researched and has changed my habits for what will certainly be the long term.

An eye opener

A fascinating book to listen to. It shines a bright light on the food industry and really makes you think about what you’re eating. It’s very worrying to think about what the future holds for today’s children.
