About this listen
Beriln. May 1940. As Hitler prepares to invade Western Europe, there is bloodshed closer to home
'Scarrow's Berlin is sharply drawn with closely observed detail, a place that reeks of threat and fear - and not just from the Gestapo' Financial Times
CI Horst Schenke is an investigator with the Kripo unit. Powerless against the consequences of the war, he fights to keep criminals off his patch. But with doubts growing about his loyalty to the Nazi regime, he is walking a tightrope. If his relationship with a Jewish woman is exposed, a dreadful fate awaits.
Berlin's gangsters run their crime rings with impunity. Decadent senior Nazis protect them. Schenke is different. He won't turn a blind eye when innocents are caught in the crossfire between warring gangs. But dangerous enemies know everything about him. They will do whatever it takes to bend him to their will . . .
From the seedy wartime nightlife scene to aristocratic homes frequented by the Führer, as the distant war spirals ever closer, A Death in Berlin conveys the horror and banality of evil - and the terrible danger for those who dare stand against it.
The stunning new Berlin wartime thriller from the author of Blackout and Dead of Night. ©2024 Simon Scarrow (P)2024 Headline Publishing Group Ltd

Throughout series great characters and realistic script. Very effective narration.
D.I. Schenke of the Kripo in Hitlers Germany at war. Policing and staying true to a 'moral compass' in times of Social change provides very real challenges for Schenke and his squad, and makes for a very interesting environment.
I'm looking forward to Shencke being sent to apply his flexibility to a sensitive case on Jersey and trying to navigate both Police perspectives ( perhaps even with a French 'Milice' involvement!
Every Title in this series builds on the first and follows very well indeed.
There must be a fascinating T.V. series in this!

The depth of detail in the main characters leaves me waiting with anticipation for the next book.
I love the story telling, the characters and the history. the book is well written and well read other than the accent of some of the characters, it sounds strange listening to German characters with Scouse, Geordie, Scottish and Welsh accents rather than the neutral tones of the narrator.

It's Kriminal with a K
Solid story but not very surprising if you know a little about prewar Germany. The main characters do not develop and become very close to twodimensional, it is the baddies who carry the story and the use of British dialects to add to their persona's gives a little extra gravity.
The narrator does the usual top notch work - except for the inconsistency in how to pronounce the various police ranks, which probably is the authors fault. When you make the effort to pronounce "Scharführer" in good German, please do the honour with Kriminalinspektor (two K's even)
Overall I liked it. Not the best that Simon Scarrow has written, but it still is an enjoyable listen and it will be interesting to hear where the team is going next.

Mr Scarrow’s usual high standard
Intriguing, well structured tale taking place in convincing atmosphere of time and place. Only observation is that the narrator is excellent but not sure the variety of British accents works or is necessary.
