Summary

The 11th book in the epic and best-selling series that has gripped millions.

A hero will be forged from this broken land. As seen on Netflix and BBC around the world.

Lord Uhtred of Bebbanburg knows that peace is far from reach. Though he has won the battle for his ancestral home, rebellion looms in Mercia and invading Norsemen appear at every turn. With the country in turmoil, Uhtred comes face to face with King Skoll, a violent Norseman leading an army of úlfheðinn, or wolf warriors, hellbent on seizing a kingdom – and killing any in his path. Surrounded and outnumbered by new enemies, Uhtred must call on all his skill and courage to survive and prevent his beloved Northumbria from falling to the Viking hordes.

Audible got this very wrong

Although a great story, the opening started at Chapter 7 or 8 and the second half of the book played first, with the ending in the middle of the recording. Not what I expect from Audible and to be frank, it ruined a good book and story.
Audible at fault not Bernard Cornwell.

not the best but still pretty damn good

Firstly, Matt Bates. He is perfect for these books. His voices are so varied and distinct. He gets the few women's voices perfectly.
Secondly, the story. England now has a name, but if any books are going to tun you right off Christianity, these are the ones. Why couldnt the Christians accept other religious beliefs. Nowadays Alfred the Great would be in the UN court - and we'd all be Danish and worshipping Thor, but those Danes seemed to know how to have a good time - apart from all the raping. But different times.
Lastly, the writer. You want to know what a battle was really like, then he shows you.
But. Matt Bates brings this to life. Jonathan Keeble reads Sword Song and ruins it.

Bought as I cannot wait for the next tv instalment

I bought this as Google tells me the series closely follows the books and I can’t wait another year or two for the show climax. The last Netflix series is to be a film anyway, so 20+ hours of audio is much more satisfying than a few hours of TV. Many of these characters are already dead in the show, but it wasn’t hard to follow along.

Brilliant story

I think this was the one time where Uthered met his match. It was fantastic to see him being really challenged and it seems like it was just luck that brought him his success. Great performance from Matt Bates as per!
