Summary

Even before he could move, the full realisation of what confronted him blazed in the Pharaoh's mind. This was the foul and loathsome thing that Taita, with his clairvoyant powers, had smelt in the air. The light was strong enough for him to make out every detail of the enemy he had loved as a friend.

The magic of the gods. The treachery of man.

In his long life, Taita has gone from slave to warlock, and now his wisdom and abilities are known throughout the kingdom. But even his immense skills cannot protect those close to him from the evil that lurks at the heart of Egypt: Lord Naja, self-proclaimed Regent until the Prince comes of age.

Taita must summon all of his formidable gifts to protect the true ruler, the young prince Nefer - grandson of Queen Lostris. As enemy forces join together to bring destruction to the whole land, it is no longer a matter of simple magic. To defeat the false Pharaohs, the gods and armies must share their powers with a mortal warlock....

As always.... A pleasure to get lost in the world that Mr Smith makes real

Loved it. Thank you. Looking forward to next part of this amazing story as it unravels in ways you just can't make up.

Disappointing

Having read all the Wilbur Smith titles and thoroughly enjoyed them.
I started on the audio to listen whilst working or in the car.
However I found it hard to keep on listening to this and started it so many times. The storyline goes back and too over old ground and the narration doesn’t help. Sometimes couldn’t make out the evil ones from the old crones as they reminded me of the Count on the Muppets.

Maintained High Standards

My eager anticipation for this next volume in the series was certainly not disappointed. My attention was held throughout the amazing twists and turns of this dramatic novel and although I knew it would probably have a 'happy ending', the intervening story drew me in, capturing my imagination with satisfying, delightful escapism! So very well narrated!!!

A detour into pure fantasy

The first two books are more adventure than fantasy and more enjoyable than number 3 in the series.

Excellent listen

My only bugbear was the lack of chapters, makes it annoying when trying to find your place when you’ve drifted off to sleep.
