Summary
This time, it’s not a job.
After proving his innocence as a murder suspect, taking down an assassin, and being an instrumental part in solving a high profile murder, Calvin Watters believes he can finally move on, until Ace Sanders’ prison escape catapults him into action.
This time, it’s personal!
Something has always bothered detective Dale Dayton about the arrest of Ace Sanders. Call it police intuition, but his inner "cop alarm" keeps twitching. When Dale reopens the case, he’s introduced to new evidence that leads him into a political nightmare.
Who will play the wild card to survive?
While Calvin tracks Sanders across continents and into unknown, unfriendly surroundings, Dale remains in Vegas to uncover the truth behind police corruption, prison escapes, and hired assassins. But Calvin and Dale must be vigilant, because there’s a deadly, new player in town.

Don't know about a wild card but it is a wild ride
This is the first book by this author that I have read or listened to and although I think I should have started with book one, so I understood the connections more I still enjoyed it. There was plenty of action to keep the listener listening well into the night. It was well written, whether it was describing the scenery or action scenes you had no problems imagining it as it unfolded. There was also plenty of twists, so you were never sure what was going to happen next. The characters were likable and had you hoping nothing bad was going to happen to them. I will certainly be keeping an eye out for the next book, I might even have to go back to the beginning as well.
When Ace Sanders escapes from prison and his plane crashes in the Amazon Jungle, Calvin finds life to be a little different to the concrete city he knows as Las Vegas as he attempts to track him down. Meanwhile Dale and Jimmy , two LVPD detectives are looking into the case that sent Ace to jail in the first place, as well dodging an assassin who has a grudge against there friend Calvin. The assassin just has to find the right target that will bring out his prey and he thinks the two detectives will lead him to it. As the body count rises both in the jungle and on the streets it is a race against time as to who will come out victorious.
I liked the narrator and had no problems working out which character was talking, which made the hours fly by.

He will want blood.
An injury to the knee destroyed Calvin's hope of a superstar sports celebrity. Tatooed, big and black, he'd worked for a while as a Collector, recovering money from those who didn't want to pay their debts. But Calvin left that world, setting himself up as a P.I. with his ex prostitute girl friend as his secretary.
Dale was a Los Vegas cop and Jimmy his partner. When Calvin had become chief suspect in a murder a year or so before, he and Dale had become friends as they worked the case together. When two men from their past escape from prison, Calvin is again asked to help out.
This is a mystery thriller full of intrigue and twists, the characters flawed and as important to the story as the plot itself. Well written, almost plausible, this is a great read. Ignore the slightly clumsy prologue: from chapter one the book becomes unexpected and un-put-downable. And the narration by Connor Goff is also well performed, making the reading experience even more satisfying.
My thanks to the rights holder of Wild Card, who, at my request via Audiobook Boom, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. From the epilogue reveals, it seems that I can look forward to future adventures of Calvin Watters. Best to start with book one, Dead Man's Hand, but could be read as a stand alone. Recommended
