About this listen

The brand new novella in the Sunday Times #1 bestselling Rivers of London series.

****

THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY ACROSS THE POND...

When ex-FBI Agent Patrick Henderson calls in an 'X-Ray Sierra India' incident, the operator doesn't understand. He tells them to pass it up the chain till someone does.

That person is FBI Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds. Arriving snowbound Northern Wisconsin, she finds that a tornado has flattened half the town - and there's no sign of Henderson.

Things soon go from weird to worse, as neighbours report unsettling sightings, key evidence goes missing, and the snow keeps rising - cutting off the town, with no way in or out...

As the clues lead to the coldest of cold cases - a cursed expedition into the frozen wilderness - Reynolds follows a trail from the start of the American nightmare, to the horror that still lives on today...

Interesting enough story, not a fan of Reynolds or her narrator though. Might listen again one day, but most likely not.

Meh

Yes this could have been an X-Files episode. However X-Files in the Rivers’ universe is a very special thing indeed. Love Penelope Rawlins’ narration.

Great fun.

Such a shame that this story does not have the same thrill or even interest than Ben’s previous Rivers books.
I did not enjoy the American accent although I understand the need.
I feel that these Novella’s have gone way off track.

Another disappointment

The storyline was probably a four and a half, but narrator was a bit off. The book would have benefited from a sub title, making clear it was a novella written from the viewpoint of Agent Reynolds.

The narrator was alright once you got used to her. The low point was her impersonation of Peter Grant. Someone should have given her a bit of coaching in how to do a young black Londoner’s accent. There was the odd annoying mispronunciation here and there, like the author’s name. These are little things, but they have a cumulative annoying effect. I thought the story wasn’t quite up to Ben’s usual standard. I absolutely love ROL books, and I’ve listened to the entire series twice. I don’t think I’ll bother with this book again. I had to buy it. It was ROL. Should I have saved a credit? Mmmmm 50/50.

A bit of a let down compared to previous ROL books.

I enjoyed the story and performances. It was a pleasant change from the Rivers of London readings

A nice change

Nice little side adventure, and I enjoyed the vibe outside of London (had a similar feel to foxglove summer in its natural element).

The narration was good, although I felt the characterisation range wasn’t that brilliant. Saying that, very hard to stand up against Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

Entertaining listen

I have loved every other book in the series, was so pleased to see this that I purchased an extra credit to listen. I was really disappointed and agree with the other reviews. I listened to the end hoping that something would eventually happen other than running around in snow. Do not make the same mistake, if you do want to listen just wait till you have a spare credit.

So disappointed

I liked the story overall and the reader, she's sounds much like I had imagined her from Peter Grants tales, looking forward to the next in the series

it's nice to see the expansion of the 'Rivers' series into the US

I'm a die-hard Rivers of London series fan, and I usually love anything to do with them, but this one just felt a bit spare. Perhaps it's the high-bar on delivery set by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, who absolutely smashes the delivery on these pieces, but the performance and narration on this felt flat and uninspired. Possibly that robbed the story of some of its vibrance, or possibly a slightly less dynamic story robbed the narrator of their passion. Either way, I'm really keen to get back to the core adventures of Peter, Nightingale, Abigail,

The story was OK, but didn't feel vital. Delivery was so-so.

I loved descriptions of the places and the intense cold. The dependence on the indigenous people for the storyline was an added bonus

brilliant, love the atmosphere
