About this listen

**THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER**
Most of the psychiatric cases in this book are Benji’s patients. Some of them are his family. One of them is him.

Unlocking the doors to the psych ward, NHS psychiatrist Dr Benji Waterhouse provides a fly-on-the-padded-wall account of medicine’s most mysterious and controversial speciality.

Why would anyone in their right mind choose to be a psychiatrist? Are the solutions to people’s messy lives really within medical school textbooks? And how can vulnerable patients receive the care they need when psychiatry lacks staff, hospital beds and any actual cures?

This is an eye-opening medical memoir – from both sides of the doctor’s desk. The perfect read for fans of This Is Going to Hurt, Unnatural Causes and The Prison Doctor.

A humane, hilarious and heart-breaking window into the world of psychiatry from ‘the Adam Kay of mental healthcare’ (THE TIMES)

‘This is honestly my dream book… Fascinating’ FERN BRADY
‘Fearlessly honest, funny and uplifting’ JO BRAND

‘Very funny and deeply sympathetic. Really excellent’ HENRY MARSH

Witty & moving. Captivated me from start to finish.

Equal parts witty & profound, great storytelling. Lots in here that I identified with as someone who works in mental health in the NHS. Felt like the book was like a little companion to me whilst it lasted. Didn’t want it to end!!

A warm, insightful gem of a book.

A warm , insightful book about psychiatry and mental illness. At times heartbreaking but also filled with gentle humour and compassion. Beautifully read by the author. I loved it.

Honest, Funny & Eye opening

Well read & interesting. Highly recommended.
Some disturbing tales about lack of solutions lack of resources & a broken system. Some stories of success, improvements & good luck.

A must listen

Benji is not only a skilled comic, but also a rich storyteller. I found Benji through the comedy world, but I stayed for his vast medical knowledge and narrative skills. This book made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. As a former mental health professional I related strongly to the plight of Benji and his colleagues, but also with the stories he tells. I wish I could make this book mandatory reading for the government, they would find it eye-opening. I can't wait to see what Benji writes next!

Excellent book

Really excellent book, the right mix of information, insight and humour. The sort of book that you wish there was a bit more when you finish it - a bit ironic given the subject matter. Every case is interesting and also Dr. Waterhouse's perspective on things is so refreshing to hear, especially in today's world where "mental health" has become a buzzword for all and sundry, inappropriately used and exploited by organisations and individuals alike. Very well narrated too.

Funny, frightening, informative. A must-read.

The narration is spot on (unsurprisingly) the stories of each patient are remarkable and the sadness, hope and humour of the author make for a book much superior to “This Is Going To Hurt”.
