About this listen

All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels.

All Systems Red tackles questions of the ethics of sentient robotics. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.

But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a primary concern.

On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied 'droid - a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as "Murderbot."

Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.

A fast-paced shoot up, who done it, with no philosophical ramifications unless you have been living under a rock for the past fifty years.
Fun fast read that will not stay in the long-term memory circuitry.

Do weapons systems dream of the wild west?

Not a great SciFi reader but I enjoyed this a lot. The protagonist made story for me. My only complaint is that it felt short and end sort of lackluster bit that just made me want to read the next installment more.

A socially awkward Murderbot is endearing.

This is a very good story well worth reading.

On the thing that put me off intially and others it is short for 1 credit. I would still say it is value because it is a good story and worth listening, there are very few audio books i have liked more. The shorter length means it feels different to normal length and that works in its favour. I kept these books for when i wanted to something special and they did not disappoint.

Nice zippy Sci fi

Great story, although a little short. Kevins narration brings the story to life.
Will be getting the rest of the books.

A new favourite

Never sure what to expect when presented with a bunch of freebies by the plus catalogue, but why not I thought.

I've ended up listening to books one thru 4 pretty much back-to-back. I'd class it as a fairly cosy murderbot series, with a main character I found it really easy to engage with.

I've noticed that there are a few new releases which will be chargeable and that seems perfectly fair and reasonable given the overall hours of enjoyment so far.

Unexpectedly engaging!

no idea what happened at the end there. feeling bewildered and like the rest of the book was wasted.

75% OK...

enjoyed the story as I don't listen to sci-fi type Audibles but this was a well written well narrated story that was enjoyable and I listened to it in one sitting. was a freebie so even better, would recommend this to anyone looking for something just a little different.
