Summary

Two victims. Nothing connects them, except that someone buried them in the exact same way. Seven hundred years apart.

An archaeological dig at the old South Leith parish kirkyard has turned up a mysterious body dating from around 700 years ago. Some suspect that this gruesome discovery is a sacrifice, placed there for a specific purpose.

Then a second body is unearthed. This victim went missing only 30 years ago—but the similarities between her death and the ancient woman's suggest something even more disturbing.

Drawn into the investigation, Inspector McLean finds himself torn between a worrying trend of violent drug-related deaths and uncovering what truly connects these bodies. When a third body is discovered, and too close for comfort, he begins to suspect dark purpose at play—and that whoever put them there is far from finished.

Another gripping story

I have been on tenterhooks waiting for another episode of the Inspector McLean saga and have to say I was not disappointed. Excellent narration by Ian Hannamore brings Tony and his coworkers to life in another story with its unusual twist. Can't wait for another!

Is this really the end?

Beautifully narrated atmospheric tale. A little over long in places but still up to the usual standards and an enjoyable listen. The whole series of books have been an excellent blend of police procedure and teamwork with the supernatural.

As FANTASTIC as ever

I love the characters in these novels and this one was no different, although I do like the character of Rose and her parts where quite small in this book.

Another great McLean story

As one born and educated in Edinburgh it is so good to have a minds eye picture of the locations and landmarks in the city. Would like any future stories not to get too embroiled in the occult !

Exhaustion bordering on comatose.

This one is not up to scratch. I thought if I heard another word about exhausted policemen I would lapse into a coma myself. I have listened to the entire series and loved it but this one has little new to offer and I found my mind wandering.
The reader as always is excellent and saved the story from being a total bore.
Sorry, but here’s hoping the next one gets an infusion of energy.

His best yet

I have to start from a different place when I listen to a James Oswald book. I suspend my sense of reality. Good story. Fantastic narration. But what next?

Why no Tv program or film?

These books would make a fab series or films. Love the stories. They never disappoint. Narrator is great and stories are brilliant. Hopefully there will be a next book.

Fab Mix of thrills , Spills and mystique!

Fab addition to the on going mysteries mishaps and murder in the city of Edinburgh, the wonderful web spun by James Oswald and his deep complex cast of heroes and villains .
Dare you risk your security and sanity to this wonderful tale?
