Summary

In Classical Mythology: The Greeks, widely published Professor Peter Meineck examines in thrilling detail the far-reaching influence of Greek myths on Western thought and literature. The nature of myth and its importance to ancient Greece in terms of storytelling, music, poetry, religion, cults, rituals, theatre, and literature are viewed through works ranging from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey to the writings of Sophocles and Aeschylus. Through the study of these time-honored myths, the Greek heroes and gods - including Heracles, Zeus, Achilles, Athena, Aphrodite, and others - leap from the page in all their glorious splendor. The following lectures are not only an entertaining guide to Greek mythology, but a fascinating look into the culture and time that produced these eternal tales.

mouth noises and strange pronunciation

unfortunately the presenter has a lot of mouth noise and silent burping due to poor breathing. he also has some very odd pronunciation, such as 'folk' that changes every time he says it. he also assumes that the listener knows Greek myths well when most people don't.

Mythology Busted

I've not heard them all yet, but I cant get enough of Professor Meinecks lectures on the Greek myths. Brilliant so far and so informative Professor Meineck has you thinking of these myths in different ways and puts new slants on the reasons for them. Interesting lecturer, with the lectures set out in an easy to follow production. Give me more.

Name one hero who was happy.

Any additional comments?

I'm listening to this for the 6th time, which sums up what I think about this book. Peter Meineck has done a great job of analysing Greek mythology without robbing it of its magic and beauty. And he has a delightful sense of humour - essential in this subject area. From the opening story of the earliest recorded wine and cheese party with a murderous monster, I was hooked.

So I said to Aphrodite

Five minutes in and you know that you have struck gold. Meineck is a great speaker - this is no dry lecture but an engaging tour through these great stories. You never get bored and your attention will not drift. Do you really want to listen to this whilst sitting in the traffic in the rain - absolutely! You can smell the retsina and feel the sun on your back. Great stuff. Almost as good as Clash of the Titans.......

Very entertaining

Very entertaining and engaging speaker. Casual tone and very informative. Covered all major aspects yet was not dry. Especially entertaining recount of the Odyssey, the lecturer makes one relate to Odysseus.

I especially enjoyed the stories about the early titans and their scuffles.

The lectures are well structured with objectives and summary.

Meineck delivers

A set of relaxed but insightful lectures on Classical Mythology, sometime they feel quite conversational, but in a good way. Can recommend.

A book I keep going back to

Meineck is such a great historian and tutor. I wish there were a lot more audio books by him because this breakdown of Homer's classics and some of the great literature and plays make it so digestible and understandable without simplifying. I bought this years ago and have gone back to it so many times since. It's a great listen alongside the Iliad and Odyssey (British narration)

Decent

Well read, loads of interesting details dotted around and further reading pointers presented. The subject is generally covered broadbrush... but nonetheless, comprehensive... as much as possible in the time allocated.
