About this listen

One captain’s death might turn out to be humanity’s best chance at survival.

As humanity expands into the stars, it discovers the universe is a hostile place.

When Captain Slater of the USS Franklin is assigned to a deep-space reconnaissance mission, his ship is destroyed by an unknown alien race.

Much to his surprise, Slater isn’t killed - he’s transformed. He is now a “derelict” - a consciousness bound to his old vessel.

Slater must quickly adapt to his new existence before raiders, alien armies, and mysterious forces seek to destroy him for a second and final time.

A fun dungeon core novel with a decent explanation as to why dungeon cores exist. I'm always a fan of naval combat, so its nice to have it as a slight focus in space, which is a particular interest to the author and it shows.

Basically written, poorly performed.

Not a bad idea but the most I can say is “meh”

Well that happened

This book had a brilliant narration with Jack Voraces but I still found the book to be lacking in places and although I liked the concept of it the execution could have been a bit better. I would recommend it to anyone who knows they really liked dungeon core LitRPGs.

A brilliant narration!

I absolutely love the narration by Jack Voraces.
Also the story was something I've never seen before. Not even close.
Very unique and therefore very entertaining. Only let down for me is that it is very America focused (his choices on ship designs for example).

A really good start to an epic story

The typical dungeon core happens on a planet BUT this book takes that idea one step further. This book is about a dunegon core in space! It brings both fantasy, litrpg and sci-fi together seemelessy!

This book is fun and engaging and the MC makes some interesting decisions. Its always a bonus when the MC has a brain! I really enjoyed this take of a dungeon core book and look forward to book 2!

Final note the narrator did a fantastic job with his character voices, he really brings the story alive!

Interesting take on a dungeon core book

Well I love my Sci Fi space opera’s. This is one to enjoy. The plot is uniquely fun, and very enjoyable. It feels open enough to get a good 7 books after. Let’s hope so. 😊

Surprisingly Addictive

Dean henegar is one of my newest favourite authors I don't get much time to read books so I mostly have to use audiobooks within a car. loving sci-fi military and anything to do with dungeon core adventures this covered all the bases and threat to be a sublime as it was. and the voice acting from Jack was awesome really told the story was helped story unfold. I've now completed the book two and three. I can officially say I always wanted to hear the next book because they are so good also with Dean's military background using some of the military terminology and names of certain things which I do not want to say because I was spoilt it it was awesome idea.

The best storyline I've heard in a long time

It took me a little while to get into this title as I'm new to the theme, however I quite enjoyed it by the end. I also enjoyed the regular instances of battle & conflict facilitated by the setting.

The narrator has quite an odd syncopation & the voices he's used for the characters are unique and varied, are a bit cartoonish. But once you get used to it, I'd say he does a pretty great job of keeping you engaged.

The stories quite plot / action driven & again thanks to the main plot device. This led to alot of listed descriptions being used to build out elements of the moment to moment action / world. I personally preferred when the narrative diverged away from this.

I would have liked to have seen more of the parasite character, as I thought he & the captain had a good banter / back and forth going on. Having that counter balancing character, who was some times helpful, subservient, snide, cheeky, back stabbing or conniving, each individually or all at once, really helped the story.

I've gone for 4 out of 5 as I would have like to have seen a bit more of a complex natural evolution of the story, with less of a reliance on lv 1 Lv 2 etc. mechanic that was used to describe upgrades. Instead I enjoyed it when the author described how the characters, ship built & monsters evolved with improved stature strength or features, same goes for fire arms & sci-fi elements.

At the moment there is a bit of a elves in space theme which is cool if your good with that going in, a bit more nuance though would be great. The author excels when these races diverge from the template and develop their own elements & traits.

Again the ready action, construction and bombastic elements are all big plus points for me, so if your after a good sci-fi / fantasy romp this I good title to crack into. It's a good first book in the series with room for improvement & with plently of space for the story to grow.

I look forward to listening to more in the series & titles from the author.

Quite good - new to this style of story

For starters, this was my first LitRPG novel, meaning I did not know exactly what I was getting myself into. I came across it purely because there was a bigger than usual interest for the next book in this series at Reddit.
Without having any experience with this genre or even with role-playing games in general, I really enjoyed the book! So I would recommend not being too hung upon the LitRPG tag and giving it a go. It was fun and easy listening and I went through it very fast. In fact, I pressed play for the second book, the minute this one ended!
There were some parts that became a bit repetitious, but as can be read from above they did not bother me too much. The narration by Jack Voraces was nicely done and balanced out the repetitious parts as I actually enjoyed the voice acting for these portions even though I did not enjoy the content. Some of the accents took some getting used to in the beginning and I needed some time getting the hang of them so they would not be too distracting (this often happens to me at the start of new books as English is not my native language).
Overall, I enjoyed the content and narration. Would recommend!

I actually really enjoyed this one.

This book starts off a little slow for my liking and doesn’t find its pace until later in the book but if you hear with it, you’re taken on a journey that unfolds and becomes is enjoyable to be on. This is my first LitRPG and one I did enjoy.

In some ways I found the stats readings interesting but also a little repetitive but thankfully they don’t happen too much. The story itself finds its groove and becomes captivating, and I really enjoyed the authors use of factual history in this book as inspiration for names. I thought the addition of that at the end really rounded it off nicely.

The narration was good, characters were given their own voices and personalities throughout and I enjoyed the performance overall.

I would recommend giving this a shot!
