About this listen
Do you like…kobolds?
Do you like…necromancers?
Do you like…pineapple on pizza?
Well, if you answered yes to the first two questions, then this is the book for you. If you answered yes to the third, well…my mother taught me not to say mean things to people…even if they do deserve it!
Money, as they say, is the root of all evil. Not having money, that is. When budget cuts at the high school where JT teaches threaten his mortgage, he’s forced to seek an alternative source of income.
Using the latest VR technology that lets the body rest while the mind is at play, our digital entrepreneur dives into the latest VR MMO game Argos Online with a potentially exploitative character build no one saw coming: the Kobold Necromancer.
He’s got all of spring break to see if he can grind the system for all it’s worth…or end up spring broke in search of a new place to live with his wife and young son.
YES: Stats, cursing, kobolds, slice of life
NO: Harem, explicit, pineapple on pizza

The combat was well done. The skills different from the usual which I appreciated.
The people encountered were nice for the most part and things were kept fun. There was humour too.
The pace of the story was just right.
The narrator did a great job. The reading pace was perfect.
I really hope there is another book. The author and narrator have my thanks.
A really enjoyable listen

Only regret it is a stand alone book, some of the characters deserve more of a story.
All round great book

I liked the game world and mechanics. The skills and items were well thought out and lead to some good combination in their interactions.
The narrator did a great job adding to the humour and gave distinct voice to multiple characters
I know this is a stand alone book but I’m hoping it is successful enough to revisit this series and produce a sequel.

A fantastic story
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
At the start the hero explains how he has studied the game and knows how to make money from it using an unusual character build. That character has a major negative racial trait in sunshine sensitivity that is acknowledged and then ignored as he unerringly fights above ground in daylight. Shortly after discovering that we realise the hero could not have researched anything as initially it seems mining is to be the gold farming focus but he doesn’t know how that works, no idea where the resource nodes are located and at what level he would need to be to safely gather higher level resources. Next we discover that he doesn’t know what the death penalty is even though it is so onerous it would never be implemented in an MMO today.
The book is then just the story of him slowly levelling up and discovering new crafting skills that he has obviously never researched. There is no antagonist, there is no peril, there are few other players and certainly nobody else competing with him which given he is a self confessed gold farmer I found odd.
On a positive note the book is very gentle with a pleasant if dumb hero and does give good descriptions of the battles that unfortunately are pretty much tank and spank. I found this a nice book to listen to last thing at night where nothing would happen to prevent you drifting off and where you miss little if you did.
That said, about four hours before the end where once more our protagonist finds both a major profession in MMOs that he is clueless about and also an item that his research told him exists for every race but he didn’t know it would include his race…what flipping research, the guy is clueless. This is when the book finally elicited a feeling of absolute frustration with this idiot such that I stopped listening.
If only the book hadn’t presented our hero as a knowledgable gold farmer I would have really wanted to see how it turned out.
