Summary

Number one best-selling author Mike Kraus's quarter-million best seller is now available in its definitive edition!

When the end of the world arrived, it came not with a bang, as most expected, but with more of a "pfft" instead.

Humanity has been torn asunder and brought to the edge of total annihilation in less than an hour. For those who died, it was a quick death, so fast that their brains didn't have time to process the pain signals from their nerves. For those who survived, the true horror is about to begin as they struggle to not only stay alive, but come to grips with the shocking realization about what - and who - was responsible.

Final Dawn is a thrilling post-apocalyptic series that follows the journey of four people who survived the end of days.

Leonard McComb - A grizzled veteran of the New York City sanitation department, trapped underground in the city's vast sewer system when the world ended.

Nancy Sims - An accountant, traveling across the plains of the Midwest towards a new job, caught in the middle of nowhere, destruction all around her.

Marcus Warden - A self-made millionaire from New York, vacationing in a national forest of West Virginia when the bombs fell.

Rachel Walsh - A wife and mother whose family is swept away in the blink of an eye, struggling with her loss and the dawning realization of what may have truly transpired to bring about the end of the world.

Great characters, great story.

I really enjoyed this series and it gave me plenty of late nights.

I only have one suggestion if you undertake an endeavour like this again. You don't have to say written by and narrated by so many times, it became annoying after a while.

I survived...just.

The first part of the trilogy was good, the second was somewhat irrelevant and the third became annoying, which is why I’m giving it 3* overall. Mike Kraus is a good narrator when reading the story but the voice characterisations are pretty dreadful. The female characters are strong, independent, intelligent women, which is a positive but Mike Kraus manages to make them sound like they belong in a Scooby Doo cartoon. Lennard, on the other hand sounds like a cartoon thug. By part 3, I was struggling to continue and this was compounded by the Russian submarine commander leaving an American woman in charge of his submarine. A woman who has no knowledge of nuclear submarines at that. For me, it stretched credulity too far. The addition of all the Russian accents left me struggling. The first part is a good story, although probably better read than listened to. I think it should have ended there since the rest of the trilogy doesn’t really add anything.

Naration should have been done by a professional

The naration doesnt give the story the respect it deserves. The inflections given in the characters speach gives them a child like characteristic with an amaturish feel. A great story which would probably be better served with a professional narator like Scott Brick or the like. Couldn't finish. Will probably read the hardcopy.

Good read

Enjoyed the plot, different take on an apocalyptic event. Found the narrator needs to try different voices for women though. They all sound the same... like hysterical, screechy, teenage girls and it got a bit annoying. At one point the character Nancy ends up in charge of a Russian submarine (not a submarine story) giving orders to Russian sailors by screeching at them. Also found it a bit weird that there were no romantic involvements at all in the entire box set. In fact there was only one familial relationship and that was between a set of cousins, who were brilliant. Every other character was single with no relatives.

Meh..

I found the voice characterisations a tad ridiculous. Leonard was literally one step away from becoming the Cookie Monster and Rachel's chirpy demeanor completely at odds with the fact that her entire family had been wiped from the face of the Earth along with pretty much everyone else. Then there was the most implausible situation of Nancy effectively becoming second in command of a Russian nuclear submarine.

While story itself is ok, it borrows quite a bit from the Matrix, especially in the last book.

overall...meh...
