Summary

Do you understand who you really are? Or how others really see you? We all know people with a stunning lack of self-awareness - but how often do we consider whether we might have the same problem?

Research shows that self-awareness is the meta-skill of the 21st century - the foundation for high performance, smart choices, and lasting relationships. Unfortunately we are remarkably poor judges of ourselves and how we come across, and it's rare to get candid, objective feedback from colleagues, employees, and even friends and family.

Integrating hundreds of studies with her own research and work in the Fortune 500 world, organizational psychologist Tasha Eurich shatters conventional assumptions about what it takes to truly know ourselves - like why introspection isn't a bullet train to insight, how experience is the enemy of self-knowledge, and just how far others will go to avoid telling us the truth about ourselves. Through stories of people who've made dramatic self-awareness gains, she offers surprising secrets, techniques and strategies to help listeners do the same - and therefore improve their work performance, career satisfaction, leadership potential, relationships and more.

At a time when self-awareness matters more than ever, Insight is the essential playbook for surviving and thriving in an unaware world.

Improved my life

There are some books that are good and helpful. There are others that empower you to dramatically alter and improve your life, one baby step at a time. This is one of the latter and a book I am planning to reread and study for a long time to come. The audio book allows the author to express the emotion portrayed in many of the examples but I think I’ll need the paperback to study more thoroughly.

Insightful but corporate focused

If you can get past the corporation focus, there’s some excellent and invaluable information in this book which can be applied to your personal life.

You’re going to know your own self awareness weakness, how to improve that, how to spot unawareness in others and how to deal with others who lack have self awareness.

I like Tasha’s voice, the concepts are clearly explained with anecdotal stories, what I learnt from this book was well worth the time spent listening.

I’m looking forward to Tasha’s next book...

The PDF’s that come with the book are helpful too.

Disappointing - woolly and waffly

The title and declared subject of this book sounds great, but I was disappointed to find that it mainly consists of a series of stories about achievements or failures that frequently seemed to have little to do with self awareness, and didn’t provide much in the way of learning for the reader.
There were also many conclusions drawn on little or incomplete evidence, frequently asserting causation where only a correlation was described.
It did become more interesting towards the end were some practical exercises were described for business and non-business contexts. The exercises sounded useful.

PROPERLY CONFRONTS THE CHALLENGES OF FEEDBACK

This book breaks down the challenges of self awareness and feedback and gives practical and actionable advice on how to move through what many of us consider the emotional equivalent of going to the dentist and emerge the other side. I suggest you give yourself time to read the first three chapters as I arrived for a monthly management meeting after chapter 2 suddenly questioning whether everything I thought about myself was true! There are so many takeaways from this book and those that struck me were feedback is not just about asking for it but creating an environment where people don't have to feel brace to do so.

My favourite self development book to date

Great content that helps to understand what true self awareness is, why it is important to work on it in your personal and professional life and how to improve it.
Practical tips and exercises to follow. Really liking the author's narrative style and personal stories. Very easy to relate to. This book is so easy to listen to and the content makes so much sense, you just don't want it to end.
Thank you Tasha for such an amazing book. Please write some more!

Fantastic

Loved this, as someone who spends an unhealthy amount of time reflecting, learning I was doing it wrong seems to have removed my mental handbrake, so many pieces have fell into place. I am sure I will listen to it all again in a few months once I have had time to fully absorb and start putting what I have learnt into practice. 😊

Some good insights but a bit long & drawn out

Some good insights but did felt like it dragged a bit. Quite a few anecdotes and stories which laboured the point a bit. May suit you best if you work in the corporate world (which I don't).

A life changing read

Having never written a review I felt compelled to do so about this book. Hooked from page one and gripped to the last page, this is one of those books to reread from the moment you finish it. Filled with light bulb moments of insight and inspiration, this is (for me) a life changing book. Applicable in the domestic, work and social environments which we all live in at all times there is so much to learn and take away from this book. It's a must read and a huge thank you to Tasha for writing it.
