Summary

A deadly history.
A dangerous mystery.
And a dark plan coming to light.

In London, the past is never dead. It only...lies sleeping.

Martin Chorley - aka the Faceless Man - wanted for multiple counts of murder, fraud and crimes against humanity, has been unmasked and is on the run. Peter Grant, Detective Constable and apprentice wizard, now plays a key role in an unprecedented joint operation to bring Chorley to justice.

But even as the unwieldy might of the Metropolitan Police bears down on its foe, Peter uncovers clues that Chorley, far from being finished, is executing the final stages of a long term plan. A plan that has its roots in London's two thousand bloody years of history, and could literally bring the city to its knees.

To save his beloved city Peter's going to need help from his former best friend and colleague - Lesley May - who brutally betrayed him and everything he thought she believed in. And, far worse, he might even have to come to terms with the malevolent supernatural killer and agent of chaos known as Mr Punch...

Exceptional storytelling

Yet another great mix of magical mystery and intrigue. Characters once more leap out of the story and drag you in.

Enjoyed as always

There’s a lot of things I love about these books - London new and old, the bringing to life of the layers of history and lives going back in time, the characters, both Falcon and Police and their development through the books and the the social comment asides.

Good but preferred earlier books

Found the story hard to focus on - had to rewind a lot. Not the best but 4* I guess

Kobna H-S is a fabulous narrator, right up there with Steven Pacey... he can shade and nuance accent and tone so well. I’d listen for him alone. Still love Peter Grant & his cohort. Nightingale needs more love! I’d love to see a stand-alone nightingale book. He deserves to be more than a secondary character.

Worth the wait

l could listen to Kobna Holdbrook_Smith reading for hours his voice is so smooth and effort less. His accents bring the characters to life. Ben Aaronovitch writes so well the story is so well thought through. The descriptive scenes come to life.

tell me its not the END!!!

I love Peter Grant and when it comes to storytelling this is another pure London Adventure. I feel like the novels are growing up with Peter and I want to know more.

Any fan of the series will love this one. lots of time with the Rivers and we even see Lesley again

As always, a creative, beautifully written and
laugh out loud addition to the series. I love the narration by Holdbrook-Smith who is perfect.

Superb culmination

The final part of Peter's struggle, Nightingale underused I felt and the incarceration dragged a bit,the reunion was very sweet.
Superb series of books, read and enjoy! However, Kobna's narration takes the books to another level and I can only hear Peter's voice through him now.
