Summary

Also titled The Drowning Man.

Detective Inspector Vincent Ruiz is lucky to be alive. A bullet in the leg, another through the hand, he is discovered clinging to a buoy in the River Thames, losing blood and consciousness fast. It takes six days for him to come out of his coma, and when he does, his nightmare is only just beginning. Because Vincent has no recollection of what happened, and nobody believes him.

Critic reviews

"A thoughtful and subtle thriller, with convincing, three-dimensional characters." ( Publishers Weekly)
"In addition to delivering top-notch pacing, plot, and characters...Robotham also understands that some quests are worth any sacrifice no matter how long the odds of success may be." ( Booklist)
"Ray Lonnen's delivery is full of a snap that reflects both Ruiz's regrets as husband, father, and police officer, and his contempt for his superiors' anger when he raises doubts over a case they would prefer remain closed. Those who relish earthy accents from London's most hardscrabble sections will find plenty of entertainment in Lonnen's performance." ( AudioFile)

Still a Robotham fan

This is the fourth Michael Robotham book I have read but this one is "out of order" in that it's further back on the time line than the more recent books I have read. Sometimes that can be distrubing but the stories are so well told that it isn't at all. This book is also written in the voice of Ruiz and not O'Loughlin (though he is in it too) so a very different character comes through; a well rendered, believable character. I love Robotham's attention to detail; just enough but not too much and the different angle he has on the typical detective book.

Overlong

Until now I have enjoyed Michel Robotham’s books. This one could have been condensed by two thirds. The plot was convoluted and in places ludicrous. There were far too many characters whose existence was tangential and mostly unnecessary.
Why would the police not think first that a child of divorced parents would most likely have been taken by the aggrieved partner?
On the plus side Inspector Ruiz’s backstory was interesting and the narrator was excellent.

Great character, great story, brilliantly read

I enjoyed this even more than the first in the series.. Ruiz changed from a strident cockney to a northerner but was the better for it. Lots of twists and turns, good plot and kept me guessing. Ray Lonnen was a great narrator. I'll look for more of his work.

Lost

Thoroughly enjoyed the book and the narration was brilliant. I’m going for the whole series if books 1 and 2 are an indication of what to expect.

Lost in the series

Really like Michael Robotham and have listened to aa few of his books.

However this one is the second in the series and I am afraid it brings nothing to the table.

It's an ok story from Detective Ruiz point of view but I don't feel you will miss out if you do not listen to this one in the Joe McLoughlin series.

The rest of the series is great as you get to know more about the characters and their lives, this is more of a detective book with only a cursory glance of the bigger picture.
