About this listen

The first stunning thriller in the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series, from best-selling author Val McDermid.

Up until now, the only serial killers Tony Hill had encountered were safely behind bars. This one’s different – this one’s on the loose.

Four men have been found mutilated and tortured. As fear grips the city, the police turn to clinical psychologist Tony Hill for a profile of the killer. But soon Tony becomes the unsuspecting target in a battle of wits and wills where he has to use every ounce of his professional nerve to survive.

A tense, beautifully written psychological thriller, The Mermaids Singing explores the tormented mind of a serial killer unlike any the world of fiction has ever seen.

Outstanding, spine-chilling psychological thriller

Would you consider the audio edition of Mermaids Singing to be better than the print version?

Probably.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Carol - because she, not Tony, was the most complex.

Have you listened to any of Saul Reichlin’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to any other Saul performances, but he was great. I felt he grew into the book like the reader.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

My first Val McDermid book - but it wont be my last.

Yes, He is a wonderful narrator. I will be looking out for books that he narrates - truly masterful at story telling and character voices.

Great story, some of it uncomfortable

Superb story only marred by the narrators accents and choice of voices. Definitely not one to listen to around others as some of the erotic torture scenes are incredibly graphic.

strange broad Yorkshire accent

gripping stuff. narrator has broad Yorkshire accent which took away from some of the really gory bits , but that's OK as they were pretty bad descriptions of torture

A superb book

I first read this book when the TV series began and was instantly hooked. Beautifully told with a believable antagonist. I've always enjoyed Saul Reichlin's narrations and he does well with this one, sometimes the accents slip a little but this is a minor quibble

Gripping but gruesome

Be warned you may need to forward through some of it - it was too gruesome for me, anyway. Also, whilst most of the narration was strong, I wish narrators would avoid accents they can’t actually do.

Poor choice of narrator

A decent listen spoilt by the wrong choice of narrator. I don’t know how old he is but he makes every character sound like an 80 year old man, so unfortunately none of them sound true to life. The accents are also strange. I can’t tell if he’s a northerner trying to make his accent less pronounced, or whether he’s a southerner trying to attempt a northern accent. Either way, it doesn’t work. If you can overcome this it’s still worth a go, but be prepared.

Gruesome start

I have listened to several Tony Hill books and thought I should read the starting book. Oh boy! How someone can dream such hideousness up I don’t know. However I persevered. I still do not enjoy the narrator who seems to squeeze out the words with an effort

A storyteller supreme

As usual Saul Reuchlin is at his best and carries the story onward making you want to keep on reading even if your eyes are closing and needing sleep. I love all of Val McDermids books. Never been disappointed! An excellent story once more.
