The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct and the half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. Beyond their boundaries, they say, lie endless burned-out deserts and the remains of splintered forests. Survivors still remember the past greatness of humankind, but the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory.

Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. Mutated by radiation, they are better adapted to the new world. A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on earth, living in the Moscow Metro - the biggest air-raid shelter ever built. Stations have become mini-statelets, their people uniting around ideas, religions, water-filters, or the need to repulse enemy incursion.

VDNKh is the northernmost inhabited station on its line, one of the Metro's best stations and secure. But a new and terrible threat has appeared. Artyom, a young man living in VDNKh, is given the task of penetrating to the heart of the Metro to alert everyone to the danger and to get help. He holds the future of his station in his hands, the whole Metro - and maybe the whole of humanity.

Loved this book, its only when I went back to relisten that it hit me how good it is. Narrator does such an amazing job with the accents and pronouncing names and places. 5 stars for that alone.

I began listening to this book after seeing that both Metro games were coming to Xbox One. I wanted to read the books before I played the great looking games so the story was not ruined for me.

This was a hugely enjoyable book to listen to, best done so at night in the dark. Rupert Degas does a brilliant job of coming across as genuinely terrifying and combining this with Dmitry Glukhovsky's writing skills gives you have a fantastic book to listen to.

Couldn't recommend more if you are a fan of post apocalyotic fiction. My first audio book actually and i came here looking for more after the games. Best listened in English although its not my primary language, Rupert Degas absolutely nails it with his narrative and impersination of the various characters. Life is desperate in the Metro and Rupert delivers that sensation admirably, well done!

Mr Degas does a brilliant job of making the characters believable with his narration of them and the story of metro is just fantastic and I most definitely recommend this book to everyone
