If Andrea was a real person no one would want to talk to her because of her inability to get a full sentence out without drifting off into a daydream. Real life it would seem rude

enjoyed it very much, great storey keeping you guessing to the end, just thought the daughters part was a bit annoying, although it never takes that away from the brilliant book.

For thirty years, Andrea's life had been an unsatisfactory drift and she'd been relieved to return home from her miserable New York existence to nurse Laura, her mother, through cancer treatment. Then a celebration of her 31st birthday turns to horror when a young gunman shoots two people only to be stopped and killed by her mother. Returning home, Laura tells her she must go, cannot stay even one more night. It was as if she were someone Andy didn't know at all - where had the kind and loving woman gone?

Written in alternating present and past chapters, the full story of her mother's youth is revealed. Descriptions are vivid, the story moves at a steady pace and characters are mostly well developed. And herein lies the problem: both the main protagonist, Andy, and in large part her mother, are such annoyingly silly people it is very hard to relate to them. However, the background story is sufficiently interesting to carry the reader onward, the text well written. But frequent repetition also cluttered the book, as if the reader needed periodic updates on what has gone before,l leaving a book which would have benefited in losing perhaps four or five hours of the sixteen of this book.
Narration is by Kathleen Early, whose pleasant voice is well modulated, with a steady pace but without clear definition of voices of the characters. It was a fine reading rather than an actual performance.

An enjoyable, stand alone mystery thriller perhaps better read in print where repetitious chunks can more easily be skipped.

Karin Slaughter is brilliant at creating annoying, frustrating, normal human beings. What in any other novel will take half a page here takes three times as long due to characters' hesitancy, and human reactions. It makes you want to scream at them to do what you know they should do but what you would also hesitate to do. I love it!

I really wanted to like this but it's badly written, unnecessary long winded wording delaying the storyline. Andrea is one of the most irritating pathetic characters. Struggling to get through this. Narrators voice is grating. However halfway through this book transforms and it becomes a page turner which you won't want to put down

I haven't read a book from Kareb that I haven't liked and this was no exception. The narrator was great and just enhanced the skill of Karen's penmanship.

I am a huge fan of Karin Slaughter and this was a great standalone story but I usually read and dont listen on audio - this was an experiment for me. I didn’t enjoy it as much so probably will go back to reading - I usually only listen to non-fiction. Don’t ask me why it just works better for me that way! The narrator made mistakes with names which I found jarring and annoying, eg in an example: where she was describing two people in a fight she several times got the name wrong so it was confusing as to who was doing what eg Laura punched Laura hard in the throat. Who? Who punched who now? Took me out of the story somewhat.
Don’t let this put you off seeking out Karin Slaughter’s other work which I highly recommend.

Could not stop listening. What a great book easy to follow. Heard about the book as is a televised series so wanted to listen to the book first and I was not disappointed
