Summary

From New York Times best-selling author Penelope Douglas comes the latest new adult romance with a bit of everything...friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, and a somewhat interesting use of public places.

Misha

I can't help but smile at the lyrics in her letter. She misses me.

In fifth grade my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.

It didn't take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever... And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.

Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there's one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She's the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.

We had only three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?

Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name's Ryen, loves Gallo's pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?

F--k it. I need to meet her.

I just don't expect to hate what I find.

Ryen

He hasn't written in three months. Something's wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.

Without him around, I'm going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It's my own fault. I should've gotten his phone number or picture or something.

He could be gone forever.

Or right under my nose, and I wouldn't even know it.

4.75 Stars

Re-Read 08/12/2021 Sticking with same rating. I re-read this to determine if this is my favourite book. I've decided while everything I said in my original review is valid, and I would highly recommend this book to any and everyone who asks. It isn't my GOAT book. It's a favourite for sure, but not THE.

4.75* (original read 4/6/2018)

I was worried before I picked this up. This author, and this book in particular has been hyped up for me in a big way.

THE HYPE IS REAL, PEOPLE. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

Are Ryen and Misha perfect? No. Far from it. Is this book perfect? Kinda.

There's not much I can say without spoiling it, but I'm in LOVE with Penelope Douglas's writing and I loved this way more than I thought I would. So much so I'm itching to pick up everything she's written.

Deserves more than 5 stars!!

This fantastic, detailed, excellently plotted and written story is brought wonderfully to our ears by Laurie Catherine Winkle and Maythew Holland. They skillfully narrate with confidence, conviction and true emotional subtlty, with a style I found totally riveting.
Penelope Douglas has, again, written a story which I just cannot put down. She writes books that are memorable and complex, characters that have depth and heft. All her books merit rereading and relistening, and I will definitely want to return to this one.

Beginning great, the ending just ok

Story grabbed my interest, and it was so promising. And it followed up great, with a lot of steamy tension and snappy dialogs. I felt thrilled how plot was tangling more and more.
Ending wasn't bad, but just didn't match the energy level I was hoping for. And the epilog was just silly.
Overall solid read for genre fans.

A Most Beautiful Love Story ….

After finishing Penelope Douglas' Punk 57, I found myself longing for another listen to the audiobook to fully immerse myself in its intensity once more. Getting emotionally invested in the characters is inevitable - tears were shed.

Punk 57 is a love story worth revisiting for sure.

Laurie Catherine Winkel and Matthew Holland delivered an excellent narration that fortunately had no adverse effects.

Wonderfully terrible

Voice actors did great but this book is just high school cliches on legs + insane justifications for characters actions + sex. But if you love reading things to see just how batsh t crazy they can be go ahead and read this lmao.

Couldn't stop listening

Wow I was so hooked to this book. Finished it in less than 24 hours. I like stories like this when there is not a moment that you feel like you can pause the story. So addicting. I've only read one more book by this author "Birthday Girl" and it was just as good! I will for sure read many more!

Complicated but enjoyable

This book does have a weird premise. It’s problematic aspects feature around one of the core themes of the book: bullying, and how that fits in with the core romantic relationship. Can we really get behind a romance where the two main characters start off treating each other so badly? However, I think Penelope Douglas somehow managed to give the characters enough backstory, depth, and growth, that by the end of the book it was about two very different people (who managed to develop in a realistic way and were still recognisable) who loved and understood each other, treated each other well, and supported each other. As a reader I could understand why they were together and I believed in their relationship.

The journey along the way was also entertaining, despite both characters having certain unattractive traits and sometimes clearly making the wrong decisions. Having both points of view in the story allowed me as the reader to understand why they were acting a certain way, even though I didn’t have to support it, and also allowed the chemistry between the characters to blossom. This book is STEAMY.

The narrators were okay. I didn’t start off as a fan of their voices, however as the book went on I gradually got used to them and though I didn’t love them at the end, I no longer hated them either.

I also like how the characters made mistakes, learned from them, and tried to do better. It’s relatable. And sometimes we only realise that we could have done better in retrospect.

This is not my new all time favourite read. But, I am really glad I read it. It was interesting, fun, steamy, dramatic, and just a good read. It helped me get over a reading slump I had had recently, and I must admit that I listened to this book in the equivalent of the way I can sometimes stay up all night reading a good book until completion.

I have also read Douglas’ BULLY, and this one is far more coherent, less cringeworthy, and the romance is more well rounded. If you enjoyed that series you will love this one.
