Summary
Letting him go was the hardest thing she’d ever done…until he returns, and letting him back in proves even harder.
Elle Marshal has spent most of her life pining for the same boy. A boy she’s known since she was eight. A boy with beautiful blue eyes who’s never been interested in anything more than friendship. For years he’s been away, and she’s been able to convince herself that she can live without him—until Jace returns. And every emotion she’s spent a decade and a half denying comes crashing back with a single look. All throughout high school, she watched him date everyone but her, and while she’s no longer that girl, deep down, a small part of her still doubts she’ll ever be enough for the boy she’s loved forever.
Jace Walker is the youngest of six siblings, including four military hero brothers. Following in their footsteps was a rite of passage, but leaving the small town of Misty Peak also meant leaving his best friend. A woman he’s always wanted but never allowed himself to have. Not when he had so much to prove, when Elle deserved someone better…and when he has a habit of losing people he loves. But he’s older now. Wiser. And when he realizes he can’t deny what’s between them any longer, Jace will do whatever it takes to have her.
Getting Elle to trust he’s a safe bet proves harder than Jace thought. And when his past misfortune of losing those closest to him threatens his present—including his happiness with Elle—he’ll have to speed up his timeline if he wants to keep them both safe long enough to have a future.

Best story!!
I love visiting Misty Peak and those Walker brothers. Nyssa Kathryn gives me Jace's story, and he is all that and more. Jace and Elle were best friends, you know the kind that are inseparable. Never realizing they each had a crush on each other, Jace used his insecurities by dating other girls, making Elle feel less than. Now fifteen years later, after coming home for the Air Force Special Forces, he is hoping to rectify his mistakes and make Elle his. She is not as forgiving. No contact for years, trying to get over her love, she isn't ready to give it too freely. But when danger lurks, Jace is right there for her to keep her safe. Will that be enough to make her see? I listened to this book straight through as I do all Kathryn's books. This hit my heart, with Jace's past and his issues with being back in civilized life.I could relate to Elle's feelings, and not wanting to hurt again. Kathryn weaves in that suspenseful thread perfectly, keeping me on the edge and making me want to keep listening! This is a fantastic story and great visit to this small town.
Avery Caris and Jason Clark. I don't need to say more about this team, as they are just so good together. The emotion, the chemistry, it's all there and the duet is perfection. I loved every minute of this fabulous story and entire series.

Jace and Elle.... finally
This is a second chance romantic suspense with Jace and Elle. We've seen Elle in the previous books, and Jace is the youngest of the Walker brothers.
These two were best friends throughout high school, but Jace slowed contact after joining the air force, now he's back, and he wants his best friends back too.
Elle was devastated to lose her best friend and I love that she doesn't just let Jace step back into the role of best friend, she mourned their relationship and it isn't something she ever wants to lose again and is cautious building their friendship back up again.
The romance is slow burn, and I loved how we got to see them address their childhood securities.
The suspense outside the romance was page-turning, as it always is with this author, I enjoy how she manages to have so much going on that just seemelessly links into the story.
I'm really looking forward to Locke's story next!
🎧 Avery Caris & Jason Clarke do an amazing job, they really bring the characters to life. I can't tell you how much I love duet audiobooks. It really makes a difference to the story being able to hear each characters speech. I will listen to any book if these two are the narrators.
