About this listen

*Now an award-winning Apple TV+ series starring Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Jack Lowden*

'A terrific spy novel' Ian Rankin

'A modern masterpiece' Irish Times

Twenty years retired from the Intelligence Service, David Cartwright still knows where all the bones are buried. But when he forgets that secrets are supposed to stay hidden, there's suddenly a target on his back.

The 'Old Bastard' raised his grandson to be a hero, not a slow horse. Now, far from joining the myths and legends of Spook Street, River Cartwright is part of Jackson Lamb's team of pen-pushing no-hopers at Slough House. Which doesn't mean he won't ditch everything and go rogue when his grandfather comes under threat.

Lamb worked with Cartwright back in the day, and knows better than most that this is no innocent old man. So when a panic button raises the alarm at Intelligence Service HQ, it's Lamb who's called on to identify the body. And it's Lamb who'll do whatever's necessary to protect an agent in peril.

Excellent as always. Sean Barrett is the perfect reader for the dry humour of the story about the dregs of the not so secret services. The creaking of wheels within wheels that turn in response to another atrocity hits London...another one of the many that have happened in London through the years.

When River's grandfather, "The O.B.", is threatened the danger is brought to Slough House itself and mayhem ensures.

If you liked the other books in this series and the ghoulish humour does not offend you this is another winner.

gripping

Each book can be a stand alone read but by reading them in sequence you really get to know the main characters as they reveal more of themselves. Jackson lamb is both revolting and wonderful and the central gem of Slough house.
This book has all the usual excellent one liners, put downs and descriptive observations. The ruthless political machinations continue and the plot provides twists and turns.
All excellently done. I'm as hooked on these books as Shirley is to coke and Lamb is to whiskey, fags and farting.

excellent on many levels

I would have enjoyed this more if I had read the previous 3 and had some familiarity with the characters, who were interesting. Sound plot, clearly read.

Sub Carre but diverting enough

I’ve loved the Slough House series ever since the first book, but Spook Street is a triumph. In print it’s great: but Barrett’s narration brings Herron’s characters alive. A great story, wonderfully told…

Herron’s masterpiece

Slow Horses of Slough House show their pedigree.
Head of the stable Jackson just a laugh out loud creation. Cynical, ruthless, unbeatable.
