About this listen

Captain Keyes is loved by the public but hated by Command. He captains the UHS Providence, an aging supercarrier and the last human ship not dependent on dark tech - technology humanity has used to rule over the galaxy since barely defeating the Ixa in the First Galactic War.

Dominance has come at a cost. Over the decades, old allies have grown resentful, and when dark tech itself fails, Captain Keyes's predictions start coming true: those old allies are now enemies.

But Keyes is not the only one proven right. As the galaxy plunges into war, the Ixan Prophecies are being fulfilled, one by one. Humanity's oldest enemy is on the rise, with weaponry never seen before.

The fate of the galaxy now depends on Captain Keyes, his tired ship, and his oddball crew. It doesn't pay to be right.

An engaging sci-fi story

I received this book free in order to review it. I listened to the first on the trilogy and I can say that I would buy this book. It is a great sci-fi war story. It is heavy enough to engage the reader without being too war-heavy.

The narration is excellent. There are many characters all needing very different voices and the Narrator gives each one individuality.

I would recommend this audiobook 100%. I am definitely listening to the next one soon.

Promising start

If the next two books are as good then this will be an excellent triolgy.

As with most narrated books it has taken me quite a few goes to finish it, I find them quite soporific.

The story is well told and the characterisation is great.

No doubt the next two will follow, though I have several other titles to listen to first.

Supercarier the Ixan Phrophecies

I found this book after reading Spacers by Scott Bartlett, I told him how much I had enjoyed Spacers and as there's no sequel yet he suggested I go to the Ixan Phrophecies for my next read.

I did just that and found more of the same space opera that I loved about Spacers. The series follows the Providence Supercarier and it's Commander, Captain Keyes, the carrier is old technology in a new tech universe and we follow Keyes journey through the universe as he tries to avoid war with pretty much everyone and stop the Ixan Phrophecies from comming to be.

This is similar enough to Spacers that I felt at home listening with Mark Boyett as the narrator but different enough that it's not tired and repeated. I did question some of the logic used by Keyes in his engagements but it wasn't unbelievable enough that it bothered me.

I have lined up my next credit for part 2 and if I have to pick fault with the book it's purely for the fact that it's clearly a multi part book so at the end of course you're left wanting more. I like my books, even the ones in series to leave me at least a little bit fulfilled and not on giant cliffhangers.

If you like space opera, military sci-fi or even want a twist on naval warfare then give this a listen.

Go on Capt Keyes

I found it hard to get into in the beginning, but I'm very happy i stuck it out. Fantastic book. Narrated superbly, as usual by Mark Boyett. Can't wait to start the second book.

Awful

This is dreadful. Really, really poor stuff. I'm a fan of military sci-fi, but I really struggled to get any enjoyment out of this. The shallow characters were the worst aspect, but the sheer ridiculousness of the whole novel was at times cringeworthy. I'm not given to bad reviews and I really try hard to find merit in everything I listen to, but this has nothing with which to commend it whatsoever. Avoid like the plague.
