About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A deeply moving and insightful collection of personal essays from number-one best-selling author John Green, adapted from his critically acclaimed podcast.

The Anthropocene is the current geological age, in which human activity has profoundly shaped the planet and its biodiversity. In this remarkable symphony of essays adapted and expanded from his groundbreaking podcast, John Green reviews different facets of the human-centred planet - from the QWERTY keyboard and Staphylococcus aureus to the Taco Bell breakfast menu - on a five-star scale.

Complex and rich with detail, the Anthropocene's reviews have been praised as 'observations that double as exercises in memoiristic empathy'. John Green's gift for storytelling shines throughout this artfully curated collection that includes both beloved essays and all-new pieces exclusive to the book.

John Green manages at once to tell a story of the human condition and to tell the story of the condition of a human being. The book might have been written to tell one story, but as a different human being from John, I cannot help but read it in my own way and not in his. I don’t believe he’d blame me, though. The Anthropocene Reviewed is not a book that tells *the* thruth about the Anthropocene. It merely tells *a* truth, which is quite enough to make it more than enough.
Though I am required to do so in order to write a review, I won’t rate the book by way of a number of stars - so please disregard the star rating (I also didn’t want to book to look bad, so I left five stars). Rather, I’ll rate it with a paraphrased quote, and please don’t mistake it for nihilism, as I mean it in the best way possible: There are no phenomena, there are only interpretations of the phenomena.
John, I hope you are well.
With love,
Emil

I really enjoyed listening to this book of hope! In a world that we are all surrounded by negative thoughts about future and our planet earth, John Green makes you feel hopeful and optimistic, reminding us about all the great things in the world that makes living meaningful still.
So many beautiful quotes in this book that I wished to memorize them all!

Dear John, I have followed you and Hank online for better half of my life. Your brilliance, knowledge, curiosity and care for our world and humankind never cease to amaze me.

Here I am, sobbing on the morning tram to work. It is too much at times. Too earnest. Too vulnerable. Too existential to bear. But boy is it worth it. John, I too am fond of our capacity for wonder. Thank you for always bringing wonderful things to our attention and awe-consideration. Also your narration is incredible and calming.

I am a huge John Green fan and this is his best writing yet. It is funny, poignant, and full of the joy and confusion of what it means to be alive in the world right now. It is beautiful writing I will return to again and again.

Humbling and full of wonder

... and still bought the audiobook, knowing it would be substantially similar.

I cried a lot, laughed a lot and came away still loving John Green.

I am once again 14 and stanning John Green. This is just great. Made me cry multiple times, especially the Auld Lang Syne chapter and the Googling Strangers chapter.

thanks John

I didn't think I'd sit and read a physical copy of this and, having grown up watching Vlog Brothers, I decided audio was the best choice. It was brilliant! But now I do feel the urge to buy it for everyone I know - and maybe even annotate some of the chapters. this is a gorgeous and uplifting book which I'm going to treasure.

I chose this book for the author, whose YA fiction I have always enjoyed, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. A book for those who not only enjoy learning about things that they may not know about. The unique perspective of the author and his takes on the topics of each essay make the book truly enjoyable.
The performance by Green is strong and consistent. Enjoyable throughout
