Summary

When down-at-heel lawyer Mickey Haller gets the news that his old colleague Jerry Vincent has died, he also gets an unexpected windfall. Jerry had left instructions that Mickey should inherit all of his clients - putting Mickey's stalled career back on track at a stroke.

Not only that, but Vincent was about to go to bat for Walter Elliot, the Hollywood mogul accused of brutally slaying his wife and her lover, in a trial that promises big fees and an even bigger place in the media spotlight. If Mickey could find the magic bullet and win that one against the odds, he'd really be back in the big leagues.

The only problem is that Vincent was murdered, shot at close range in his office garage, and the detective handling the case - a certain Harry Bosch - is convinced the killer must be one of Vincent's clients. Suddenly Jerry Vincent's legacy is beginning to look more like a poisoned chalice, and Mickey is faced with the biggest challenge of his career: how to successfully defend a client who might just be planning to murder him.

Excellent

I do love a court room drama, and this is damn good. Like the strategy planning and always wonder how true it is....

A first rate novel

This is another first rate novel by Michael Connelly. Well written and well read. The characters are believable and there are sufficient twists and turns in the story to keep you guessing. Very entertaining, I recommend this to those who like this genre.

Excellent courtroom thriller

Mickey Haller, defender of the people, for the right price. Everyone's entitled to a defence, even the guilty, but don't try to deceive the hoodwink king

Another excellent Michael Connelly thriller

This is a follow-on from "the Lincoln Lawyer", the main character being the defence lawyer Micky Haller, but this time the author also weaves in his long time protaganist, Harry Bosch - this works very well. More generally, the book is right up to Michael Connelly's high standard - meticulous plotting, clever storyline and denouement, well written, and well drawn characters and plenty of pace - excellent stuff.

I've not heard the narrator before; he's not as good as the excellent Jeff Harding who has narrated a lot of Connelly books, but he does a perfectly decent job - good sense of pace and tone, good characterisation - perhaps at times a little over-dramatic.

Overall strongly recommended, particularly if you are already a Michael Connelly fan.

Hooked on Haller

A longtime fan of Harry Bosch, I only discovered Mickey Haller a month or so ago. Since then I've listened to three. A strong storyline, reinforced by an excellent performance from Peter Giles, although he needs to work on his English accent! Love the chemistry between Bosch and Haller. Have just downloaded The Reversal.....

Excellent story and brilliant vocalisation

A clever and engaging story, with good dramatic turns.

Clues to events were present but well masked at times, and the whole book was a well planned and composed one.

The reading was very well done, with the characterisations clear and differentiated but not overdone.
