While Peyton and Marco continue to struggle with their work/life balance, crime doesn’t take a break. As a homicide detective, Peyton dreaded each call, because it meant that someone had lost his or her life, but moving to Hate Crimes has shown her the darkness in humanity isn’t confined to murder.

Lifting the veil on the underbelly of the City has forced Peyton to acknowledge innocent victims can be targeted through no fault of their own. However, when a cross is burned in the yard of a civil rights activist, Peyton and her squad are on the case.

For Marco, raising a child while being in law enforcement has always been a concern, but his daughter Piper quickly became the focus of his life. His love for her drove him to take on the cold case of Audra Tarkington, the young woman who went missing thirteen years ago, but after hitting dead end after dead end, Marco isn’t sure he’ll be able to bring Audra’s father closure.

And then the Homicide Division is called to investigate the strange murder of Elliot Robertson. Putting Audra’s case on the back burner isn’t something Marco wants to do, but when a murderer is on the loose, he might not have any other choice.

Excellent!!!……ML Hamilton has done it again. I absolutely love every story with Peyton Brooks and Marco…their families, friends and colleagues are so credible with all the highs and lows that they have to deal with every day, whilst also adding lots of humour to keep the us the listener/reader wanting more 😀. I eagerly await the next book in this series….P.S….well done also to Kelley Hazen, for all the characters voices that you do. keep up the good work.

There are a few things I love about the Peyton Brooks series. First thing is that the readers get to revisit beloved characters and watch them evolve. Yes this book is about the San Francisco Police Department - Homicide division and FBI Hate Crimes division cases but it is so much more! We get to not only experience these professionals solve cases but we also get to see how their lives change. These are not easy jobs and the impact of the stress, choices, injuries and more have an impact on the psychology of each character and ML Hamilton captures these beautifully without compromising the suspense and intrigue elements of the story. As such, if this is your first Peyton Brooks book, I implore you to go back to the beginning. You won't be disappointed.

The second thing I have loved about this series is the strong commitment from author ML Hamilton and narrator Kelley Hazen to deliver a wonderful audiobook experience. I love the conversations, descriptions, dynamics and chemistry between the characters and I thoroughly enjoy how Kelley brings each of them uniquely alive. Each character has their own personality which is demonstrated through consistent story telling and narrative performance.

Regarding this book specifically, Peyton and Marco's 10 month old has been a game changer for the two characters. Their approach to work and the way they view the world has changed. Yes, there are complex cases that require their expertise, supported by their diverse and sometimes odd teams but the family dynamics, for me, is what is really unique and special.

I am so grateful that ML Hamilton has continued writing books in the Peyton Brooks universe. I am not sure I will ever be ready to let these characters go. Certainly the lot of them together is probably more circus than an actual circus, but it is beautiful!
