Summary

After her maternity leave, Peyton reluctantly returns to her job as the lead for the Hate Crimes Division. Taking this job was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. It meant staying home with her growing family and being there for all of her baby’s firsts, but this team is not like her last one, and personality conflicts are inevitable.

To complicate things further, the nature of the crimes she must now solve is heartbreaking. Hate crimes are a particularly heinous set of cases, involving marginalized people in horrifying predicaments, and her first case is no exception. When gay men are being assaulted for using a popular dating app, Peyton and her team must discover the perpetrators as quickly as they can, before another young man winds up injured, or worse, dead.

But can she hold her team together in order to solve this case? And will the demands of a new leadership role put unnecessary strain on her family?

With each swipe left, another innocent victim may be in the crosshairs of an assailant who has no mercy.

Brilliant

Another amazing book for the first in a new series of PEYTON BROOKS, Great storyline and the characters are awesome and Kelly Hazen’s narration is brilliant as always. I can’t wait for the next one.

Peyton’s and Marco’s latest cases don’t disappoint

If you have read the previous books in this storyline then you won’t be disappointed. You become so invested in their lives and the story is not only well written, but fabulously performed, so much so that the characters come alive. I love that there are parallel cases going on as all the characters have a roll to play and I enjoy how they are all so different. The only problem I have is that when you have finished the book you are left waiting for the next one to be released. ☺️☺️

Amazing!! Hard-hitting, relatable and yet humorous

First of all, as a Peyton Brook's fan, I am so glad that the whole team is back! And with fabulous flair. Our beloved protagonists are parents now and face all the issues associated with that. Peyton takes on her new role as the lead on the hate crimes division while Marco continues to face his demons.

I love how gently ML Hamilton handles the issues covered in this book. Whether it is the role of parents, the loss of a child, the abuse of drugs and alcohol, etc, ML Hamilton has not sugar-coated the truth. Peyton and Marco, like most working parents, question their priorities and even experience that feeling of guilt for not being with their child. It is amazing how this book is so hardhitting and yet not difficult to listen to. I will, however, admit to crying.

As usual, Kelley Hazen has done an excellent job of performing this book. Kelley manages to capture each character's personality in their voice and I always forget that the book is being narrated by one woman. If this is your first book written and performed by this team, you are in for a treat BUT start from the beginning. It is worth it!
