About this listen

Arriving on the windswept Ile de Ré, Tabby Dewhurst is unable to even afford a room for the night. Overhearing a villager repeating the access code to her front door, she lets herself into the house, and so she enters the strange, hidden world of Emmie, whose sudden offer of friendship is at odds with her obsession with privacy.

Tabby begins to form suspicions about Emmie, suspicions that lead her to a scandal with shattering consequences.

Fabulous and Totally Engrossing

I loved this book it was such an unusual story and had me hooked from the first minute. I really enjoyed the narration and found the character voices just right. I love Louise Candlish's books the dialogue is so realistic and the characters so well drawn. It does not matter to me that there are no great twists and turns these books are just a great listen. I am now working my way through all her titles but have been disappointed with her earlier works she is certainly an author who has really developed and always manages to create interesting and unusual plots. I would well recommend this as a good solid holiday read.

Gripping.

There's a very clever twist. So far I've loved everything I've read by Louise Candlish.

Rather abrupt ending.

I was really enjoying this story and I love her books in general but thought it slightly lost its way then seemed to have a rather abrupt ending!

Brilliant

Absolutely fantastic book . Really good story. Excellent narration. Good twist at the end but wished the ending could have been more informative

Epilogue not there

There is an epilogue to this book. The author wrote it. I have seen it in a copy belonging to a friend. Why was it not narrated feel cheated

well written but frustrating

I had the same problem with this book that I seem to have with all Louise Candlish books which results in a bit if a love hate relationship... I really like her writing and her observations but I find her plotting frustrating. foreshadowing is a great tool but Candlish uses this, and dual narratives, so much that most of the time we've long worked out what's about to happen and are waiting for one of the characters to catch up. I was also infuriated by a double standard that went completely unchallenged or commented on in the book.

Horrible performance

I listen to a LOT of audio books and shouldn’t have broken my own rule: always to listen to a sample. I was seduced by the Ile de Ré setting as I know it well- and I’d read another book by the author. The story is an undemanding domestic thriller lite and perfectly good but the reading of it is truly dreadful and comes so far between the story and the listener that it really does ruin it.
Apart from the ridiculous different voices for each character, which are ludicrous and intrusive - just bloody READ it!- there are infuriating mispronunciations of simple French words- femme, gare, pied and debuting are just a few examples - which could and SHOULD have been easily checked. Shame on the publisher too for such laziness. Ultimately too irritating to give the book even a fighting chance.

Disappointing Ending

I was enjoying the story until the last couple of chapters when I started questioning how this story was going to end. It just seemed like the writer didn't know where the story should go next so just ended it leaving you with questions about Eve and her family- and even Tabby. Its a shame as there could have easily been another couple of chapters or even another book about Tabby- did she find Eve? Did tabby go home and confront her Mother? Did she find her self worth and place in the world?
