Critic reviews
"Britain's female Stephen King." (Daily Mail)
"Her books have the ability to simultaneously make you unable to stop reading while wishing you could bury the book somewhere deep underground where it can't be found. Compelling and haunting." (Sunday Express)
"Some writers have it, and some don't. C. J. Tudor has it big time." (Lee Child)

CJ Tudor just gets better!
An excellent story with great performances from the narrators. The only downside is I have to wait for the next one to come out!

Loved it
I disagree with some of the other reviews. It is a departure from Tudor’s usual, but well crafted. I quite enjoyed it! I did not find myself confused either. The performances were good and just when I thought I had it all figured out, Tudor kept a couple of twists for the end!

Amazing!!
I love CJ Tudor and this is her best book yet, a bit of a different feel to her others and almost like a step up (she was already brilliant). There’s no one else out there writing new material that can challenge Stephen King but I think Tudor has done it! Characterisation and plot had me totally absorbed!! Loved it

Not for me
It wasn’t confusing I just think it was too close to the bone given the years we’ve lived through recently, possibly I’d have been more entertained had I listened in a few years from now, but right now? I need a break.

Less than the sum of its parts
I enjoyed it, mostly, a quick and addictive read, but once it becomes clear how the parallel stories are linked and where it's going it all feels a bit dull and pointless. One of the performers was really good (Armitage) and the other two were so so, though one of them managed to make a horrible character even more hateful with such a cringe-worthy voice that I'm still not sure as to how purposeful it was.

Good but far from the author’s best
I’ve read or listened to all of CJ Tudor’s books including her excellent collection of short stories. For me this fell a little short of all of her other novels. Perhaps it was the change from the British village or city setting to a less relatable global post-apocalyptic world, hard to tell. Maybe I’ve just read a few too many novels since covid started with a viral pandemic ravaging the world. A few good twists but felt it dragged in parts. The audiobook is very well done with the three separate performers alternating chapters and Richard Armitage is always a safe bet.
I’ll continue to read anything CJ Tudor publishes for now and rack this up as a minor disappointment. If you’ve not read any suggest starting with The Chalk Man, The Other People or The Burning Girls all of which are creepier and more thrilling than this one.
