About this listen

In tough times, crime is one of the few things that still pay, but if defence attorney Mickey Haller was expecting an uptick in business during the economic downturn, the reality is a different story. Even people needing legal representation to keep them out of jail have to make cut-backs, it seems. In fact, the most significant part of Mickey's business right now is not about keeping clients out of jail but about keeping a roof over their heads, as the foreclosure boom hits thousands of people who were granted unrealistic mortgages in the good times and now face being kicked to the curb by ruthless corporations. Lisa Trammel had been a client of Mickey's for eight months - his very first foreclosure case, in fact - and although so far he'd managed to stop the bank from taking her house, the strain and sense of injustice are beginning to take their toll, and the bank had recently got a restraining order to prevent her protesting against their fraudulent practices. But now the bank's CEO, Mitchell Bondurant, has been found in the bank's car park with a bullet in his brain, and Lisa is about to be indicted for murder. For Mickey, it's back to what he does best on the biggest stage of all, but if he thought defending Lisa Trammel was going to be a walk in the park, he'd be wrong. Not only is he about to learn some startling truths about his client, but also about himself, and by the time the verdict is in, Mickey's whole world will have been turned upside down.

Titus Welliver brings Haller alive

I much prefer Titus Welliver's narration of Haller and Bosch books. He brings the characters alive and is more believable than Peter Giles. The Crossing & The Wrong Side of Goodbye kept me interested in the story and characters.
I find Giles flat, boring and uninspiring making it difficult to stick with the books he narrates. I struggled with The Fifth Witness.
Welliver gives Haller and all the characters soul.
Giles' general narration is one dimensional and it's difficult to visualise each character. I have poor eye sight and am reliant on audible books. Welliver does an excellent job helping me visualise and connect with each character.
I really enjoy the Haller and Bosch books but Giles puts me off.
More Welliver and less Giles please.

What a story and what an ending!

This is my second book by Connelly. I remember buying the 'Lincoln Lawyer' simply because I needed distracting from science books and though that it
might have been an interesting crime story novel. But now I'm hooked on Connelly's books and can't wait for the next one.
This story compels the listener to want to know more about this case and how it unfolds inside the courts, with various moment's outside the courts. My
favourite characters are probably the Judge & Ms Freeman, apart from Micky Haller of course, as their personalities are well depicted in the framework of
the story. And what an unexpected ending!

It's Michael Connelly, of course it's great

I love Michael Connelly books and this one was no exception. Plot kept moving, great writing, a narrator who really brings the characters to life. Money well spent. I thoroughly recommend this book.
