Summary
There's something going bump on the Metropolitan line, and Sergeant Jaget Kumar knows exactly whom to call.
It's PC Peter Grant's specialty....
Only it's more than going 'bump'. Traumatised travellers have been reporting strange encounters on their morning commute, with strangely dressed people trying to deliver an urgent message. Stranger still, despite calling the police themselves, within a few minutes the commuters have already forgotten the encounter - making the follow-up interviews rather difficult.
So with a little help from Abigail and Toby the ghost hunting dog, Peter and Jaget are heading out on a ghost hunting expedition.
Because finding the ghosts and deciphering their urgent message might just be a matter of life and death.
Read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.
Critic reviews
"The Hanging Tree is definitely one of the best in the Grant/Aaronovitch pantheon. There again, so have most of the previous books in the series and the odds are the next one probably will be too." (The Bookbag)
"Aaronovitch deftly balances urban fantasy with the police procedural. As for Grant, he's a wonderful blend of laconic copper and, methodically researching how magic works, full-on nerd." (Crime Scene)
"This series is brilliant!" (Teen Librarian)

You know what you're going to get
The usual set up of the likeable PC Peter Grant, the urbane DCI Nightingale and weird Molly. Pleasantly supernatural. I very much enjoyed it. Narrator excellent. Veers from English RP to West African seamlessly. Likeable voice for a likeable character.

I missed Bev
Kobna Holdbrook-Smith was wonderful as ever. Unfortunately, being a short story, this lacked much of the B-plot I usually enjoy in this series. The context somehow managed to make it feel like a commute that than a jolly around town, which is the vibe I like about them normally. Still 4 stars though and hoping audible get the other shorts in due course.

Another great outing!
What did you like most about The Furthest Station?
Both the development of characters and the linking to prior episodes enhanced this book for me.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Furthest Station?
Finding the hidden room and the conversations with ghosts at the station.
What does Kobna Holdbrook-Smith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
The performance that Kobna gives is extremely nuanced his range of characterisation is honestly spectacular so that it is just like hearing a range of actors!
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I love the descriptions relating to life as a police officer, the contents of the go bag, the use of modern quality management language, and the interplay between characters, this often causes me to laugh out load

Brilliant book
Short- but it’s a novella! Really enjoyed this book, essential listening as with this entire series.

Too short!!!
Loved it as ever, but really wanted another full length novel rather than a mini! Sigh. Want MORE!!!

Fabulous
Nothing like a good old fashioned story to wake you up and get you out of bed early in the morning. Excellent work by both author and narrator

Comparatively short book
Good story but lacks the depth and multiple threads of other books in the series.

End snippit has major spoiler for The Hanging Tree
The audio book The Furthest Station (5.5 in the series) goes straight into a snippet of Lies Sleeping (7 in series) instead of The Hanging Tree (6 in series) which chronologically comes next according to the Audible website. There is a major spoiler for the book The Hanging Tree within the sample.

Not long enough
Just as I was getting in too this it sadly ended. As usual nice plot intresting ideas but sadly it was over too soon. I hope Molly gets a bigger role in the next books.
