About this listen

Longlisted for the McIlvanney Scottish Crime Book of the Year

A mother calls for her child repeatedly in the soft summer air, her voice rising with panic. She leans over the glass balustrade, her eyes searching the dark waters of the loch. Her only child is gone.

The disappearance of a three-year-old girl from her isolated home in the Scottish Highlands shook the nation. Three years later, the world may have forgotten the blond-haired girl with the big blue eyes, but her grief-stricken parents hire Private Investigator Teàrlach Paterson–an expert in finding missing children–to bring their precious Lily home.

Working round the clock, Teàrlach quickly uncovers secrets beneath the surface of the close-knit local community. The Masterton's nanny, fired after Lily's disappearance, is missing, and local outcast Annie could hold the key to solving the case. And then a body is found at local landmark, Hell’s Glen.

As Teàrlach pieces together the secrets at the heart of the Masterton family, tiny bones are found in the loch close to the Masterton’s home. Could they be Lily’s? Or will Teàrlach unravel a truth even more shocking?

A twisty, atmospheric, and utterly compelling thriller set within the breath-taking Highland landscape from a CWA New Blood Dagger Longlist author and McIlvanney Best Scottish Crime Novel Finalist. Fans of LJ Ross, Ann Cleeves, and Val McDermid will be hooked by The Girl in the Loch.

Kept me guessing

Well written well narrated. I haven’t encountered Grieg before, the characters are strong and I will definitely be listening to more by him

Kept me listening.

Loved the story. The characters were good, not too many of them, which for me was great as I do tend to get confused if there are. The plot was good and kept me interested from beginning to end.
I’m waiting for the next in the series to be released.

An enjoyable read

This is the first book I have read by this author, and it was an enjoyable and entertaining story with. interesting characters. However, there are a couple of things which l found annoying - firstly the great liberties taken with the geography of Scotland. The Tinkers' Heart and Hells Glen are around a 4 hour drive from Inverness so it's highly unlikely that you would just go there for a coffee. Secondly, there is no Coroner in Scotland, and thus no inquests. The Scottish legal system is distinct from that of England,Wales and Northern Ireland and it shows a lack of understanding or research by authors and their editors when this mistake is repeatedly used by many authors. That said, I'm off to download the next book from this author.

Totally gripping

I loved this. Downloaded it on a whim and couldn’t get enough. The personalities, the story, the setting all described so vividly that I just loved it and immediately downloaded the follow on book.

This is a very strong debut and I very much look forward to the next entry. If you're a fan of crime mystery thrillers with a bit of a spooky leaning then you'll very much enjoy this!

Good start to new series

Liked the characters, enjoyed narration, good plot, although maybe a wee bit far fetched, but I’m beginning to expect that from most crime & murder novels these days !
