Summary

Learn the secret – or die trying

Has ex-SAS soldier Ben Hope finally got out of his depth?

That’s the question Ben faces when the hunt for a missing girl takes him to China. He’s a stranger in a strange land – but he’s also the victim’s only hope. To make things worse, she’s almost family.

As the pressure mounts, so does the gruesome death toll. With ruthless enemies in pursuit and an unlikely alliance with an enigmatic detective his only lifeline, Ben realises that this situation is far more explosive than even he’d bargained for. Suddenly it’s no longer just the missing girl’s fate depending on him.

At the heart of the mystery lies an ancient secret dating back to China’s first emperor and the legendary Terracotta Army – a secret that people will still kill for, millennia later. Ben Hope has never turned his back on those in need, and he’s no stranger to tough odds. But can he survive long enough to discover the truth – and is he ready for the consequences?

Critic reviews

‘Compelling from the first page until the last, Mariani and his fabulous protagonist Ben Hope entertain in a gripping tale that will have you turning the pages well into the night’ Mark Dawson

‘Thrilling. Scott Mariani is at the top of his game’ Andy McDermott

‘A high level of realism … the action scenes come thick and fast. Like the father of the modern thriller, Frederick Forsyth, Mariani has a knack for embedding his plots in the fears and preoccupations of their time’ Shots Magazine

Not the best Ben Hope adventure

Lots of story with little action.
Not the worst Ben Hope adventure but poor story overall and quite far fetched 😬

Another Ben Hope classic adventure

I have enjoyed all Scott Mariani's books. The Golden Library is another great listen, with the usual trappings of a Ben Hope adventure. I do, however, miss not having the La Val staff and Storm not included, but the new characters are great. Is Scott Mariani considering ending the Ben Hope series? I hope not.

Action, suspense & great storyline

Another great story following Ben Hope in another adventure! Well structured, with enough twists & turns & great characters. Hopefully it won’t be too long before Ben is back again & we can see the path his future goes…..
Please get writing again soon Scott Mariani.

Yet another first class book from a first class writer!

I am a great fan of Scott Marianne and this book maintains the very high standard of all the Ben Hope series! Very difficult to put down, and most enjoyable to the end. The reading was as excellent as the narrative - combined a first class experience!

So good! What a story!

What a rollercoaster journey! The one nails it… although I’m left wondering about a few of the other characters. Still, brilliant!

everything

nothing to dislike and everything to like....the combination of Scott Mariani's writing Colin Harte's reading and whoever the hell Ben Hope is is intensifying...I read a lot of these kind of books usually about US special forces and I really enjoy them but the Ben Hope series is just second to none...

Ben is back and finding his way through China

I love this series, the latest book is a standard format story from the series, well delivered and entertaining. I do how ever think the Ben Hope character is a little stagnant currently, bit of trauma in his life would be good to spice up the underlying storyline of the series, maybe a relapse to alcoholism
