About this listen

When quiet Ellen Lang enters Elvis Cole's Disney-deco office, she's lost something very valuable - her husband and young son. The case seems simple enough, but Elvis isn't thrilled. Neither is his enigmatic partner and firepower Joe Pike.

Their search down the seamy side of Hollywood's studio lots and sculptured lawns soon leads them deep into a nasty netherworld of drugs and sex - and murder. Now the case is getting interesting, but it's also turned ugly. Because everybody, from cops to starlets to crooks, has declared war on Ellen and Elvis.

I am new to the author Robert Crais, although he has been writing for years. after reading a recent book I decided to go back to the first in the series. This is a good story but a little dated, hence 4 stars.

good story but a little dated.

The plot line was good and enjoyed the characters, the narration seemed to lack a certain something though

Interesting

The performance takes a little getting used to but the story is compelling enough. A good enough start to revisit Elvis Cole and Joe Pike at a later date.

Interesting characters, if a little cliché.

Liked the story once the I got used to the narrators horrible voice. Sound quality in general is like I recorded a vinyl edition of the book onto a worn out cassette. Dreadful sound.

Poor quality recording

The narrators voice has little range and sometimes you do not know which characters are talking. I love this book series but preferred reading in this case. I love Audible and most audiobooks are great but I hope the next book in the series has a different narrator as I have already bought it!

I read the book first and

Not quite the same feel as some of crais books. Still a good listen though, interesting story. Not hugely keen on the narrator.

Good book.

Keep going, that's the way forward. Great story, the first of many. Ignore the negative reviews, they obviously have no patience!

Stay with it, slow start leads to much more

Reads like a good old-fashioned 80s action flick, but the audio quality is absolutely terrible.

Good Story, Terrible Quality

‘Read’ on the basis of a strong recommendation but couldn’t get on with it. Not for me. The protagonist is a wish fulfilment, middle aged man’s fantasy so complete as to have v limited interest … a tough guy with a past but also with a sensitive side. A parade of tough guys crack wise and try to out Alpha each other. Brand names, particularly guns, are always noted, of course. Bond / Marlow are references but somehow without the historical context it just seems a bit sad - a very popular series and this is just the first so perhaps it finds it’s feet or for those who enjoy this stuff perhaps it is a great example but won’t be trying another I’m afraid.

Everyone’s a tough guy…..,yawn

I have not really got in to this book, I found it’s to be overly descriptive that I couldn’t concentrate on it enough to keep listening.

Overly descriptive
