About this listen

FROM THE #1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR

‘Deadly conspiracies, bone-crunching action and a tormented hero with a heart . . . packs a real punch’ Andy McDermott

A BRUTAL MURDER.
A SCIENTIST ON THE RUN.
A PLOT TO KILL MILLIONS.

While secretly researching the bizarre discoveries of Serbian scientist Nikola Tesla many years earlier, physicist Claudine Pommier becomes the victim of a remorseless and cruel murderer who breaks into her Parisian apartment. Is he just a serial killer, or is there more to her death than the Paris cops believe?

Maverick American biologist Dr Roberta Ryder receives a mysterious letter from her friend Claudine and travels to Paris to see her, only to learn of her shocking death. Before she knows it, Roberta becomes the target of ruthless men with a deadly agenda that only the letter can unmask. She’s alone and vulnerable. But she knows someone – the only someone – who can help her.

Ben Hope, ex-SAS soldier and Roberta’s old flame, now trying to retire to a life of peace with his fiancée Brooke, suddenly finds his life turned upside down by Roberta’s sudden arrival in England. She needs his help; he can’t turn her down. In a frantic race to Paris and halfway around the world, Ben and Roberta battle to uncover the mystery of Claudine’s research, with the killers just half a step behind. In the process they uncover a global conspiracy that will claim the lives of millions of people . . . unless Ben can stop it.

Fast paste and action packed with a really good storyline.
A little bit of a cliff hanger at the end what more could a girl want?

I always enjoy a Ben Hope story. This was no exception. I did however find it a little weaker than usual in some aspects especially towards the end. I'd have expected the hero to encounter more resistance in New York. I don't want to write spoilers here but there were a couple of things that did not add up.

Great story with plenty of action

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Fast paced full of action Ben Hope is a brilliant character

Have you listened to any of Will Rycroft’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Excellent performance really brings the characters to life

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Very much so it was very hard to put down

Any additional comments?

I really wish all of Scotts Ben hope books were avaliable on audible

Another fantastic instalment in the Ben Hope series. Fast paced adventure at its best! Also, nice to hear that Brooke has re-acquired her English accent! Absolutely a must read.

I do enjoy this series, but it is getting a bit of 'similar scrapes', ' last minute escapes' and same sort of panics.

Having said that, I like the characters, and on the whole find the stories and scrapes entertaining. Definitely worth a read!

A good tale but a bit 'same-y'

As with all the Scott Mariani books I've read so far, great story and difficult to stop listening.

The one thing I will point out is the reader's American accent. Overall, not too bad, but PLEASE stop putting an 'r' at the end of words which end in an 'a'. It really brings the performance down. Had I not been previously aware of what some of these names & abbreviations were, I would have though that you were genuinely referring to things like:
Darper (DARPA)
Nikola Tesler (Tesla)
"And my name's Roberter. Roberter Ryder" (Roberta)
Idear (idea)

All these things said in an American accent sound rather silly.

Other than that, a great book and I look forward to the next!

P.S. thank you to Will Ryecroft for portraying Brooke as English again, after Jack Hawkins, for reasons unknown, decided that, even after portraying her as English for Book 7, he would portray her as American in book 8...

Great story, performance took me out of it a bit.
