Summary

Hear the second book in The Long Winter trilogy!

They decimated Earth during the Long Winter. Now the Grid has returned, and they won't stop until the human race is extinct. On a ruined world, humanity's last survivors fight against impossible odds. In their darkest hour, they discover a new hope for survival. But it comes at an unthinkable price, with consequences that will change everything.

We thought the war was over. We were wrong. After the Long Winter, Emma Matthews and James Sinclair hoped life would get back to normal. They've settled down in Camp Seven and welcomed their first child, a daughter. And they have waited and watched the sky for any signs of the Grid's return. When NASA discovers that several asteroids have broken from the Kuiper Belt and are headed for Earth, James instantly realizes the truth: the Grid is back.

And this battle will be one to the very end. As he and his team prepare for humanity's last stand in space and on the ground, Emma makes a discovery closer to home, one that will change life for her and James once again. With war raging around them, Emma and James fight to keep their family alive.

In the cold darkness, humanity splinters. New alliances emerge. At every turn, Emma and James face new dangers and question whom to trust. Just when it seems that all hope is lost, James uncovers what may be the key to humanity's survival. But it comes with enormous risks. To implement his plan, he and Emma will have to survive the Grid and another, even more deadly enemy. One thing is certain: their gambit will change the future of the human race forever.

A great second book

This did not disappoint me, I really enjoyed the first and this was just as good. The plot is easy enough to follow just suspend your disbelief at all things science and go with the flow. The author does try to give some sort of explanation for us slower listeners but it is easier just to accept than to understand.

Again the goodies are good and the baddies are annoying, there is the proper amount of peril just to keep your interest but not so much that you feel that you are on a permanent roller coaster. I need a bit of a brain break sometimes and constant peril does not improve my enjoyment of a book.

One could leave the series here and use your own imagination to complete the trilogy but I am invested now and have downloaded the third and final instalment.

Awsome story, bad science

This is probably the highest rating I have ever given to a science fiction story that doesn't pay close enough attention to scientific accuracy. I love realistic sci fi and am usually quite unforgiving, but two things made it difficult to justify rating the book with anything less than four stars.

1: The author didn't completely and gratuitously throw away the real science. There is no faster than light travel and the technology the humans have isn't much more advanced than what we have today.
2: The story is very good. Not going to leave any spoilers, but it's clever and has interesting twists.

I'm not a rocket scientist or physicist, s o there are probably a lot more problems with the science than I could detect, but these are the ones that threw me in the series:
1: Sending out a spacecraft to one destination in the solar system and the pilots of that spacecraft just deciding on the spot, you know what, lets go to some other destination instead... and then another.
2: Navigating debris fields in space. No. You just die.
3: The sun is getting dimmer and dimmer every day, so much so that when they decide to leave Earth it's all pretty much dark... but then during their tour of the solar system on the way out they somehow get stunning views of Mars and other celestial bodies? Really? If Earth is dark, how do planets even further away from the sun get illuminated?
4: The fact they could even do a tour of the solar system. The voyager spacecraft were only able to do the tours they completed due to a narrow launch window offering a once in 175 year planetary alignment.

Definitely worth a read though.

Well, that was unexpected

This second book is a lot better than the first. Interesting, action-filled story.

The characters still have that annoying habit of not answering questions and keeping information from one another for no good reason.

Also, it's like the main character has never read War of the Worlds, which is just impossible, seeing he's a tech-nerd. ??

The narrators were superb again and I will (surprisingly) be getting the next book in the series.

I just hope the characters will start answering questions from one another as this contnuing "I can't tell them because they can't handle it" BS is super childish and annoying. Real people do not take silence as an answer.

Great book. left hanging at the end.

I am not a huge fan of the James Emma James Emma James Emma... you'll understand that when you read it. And the narrative by Edwardo always sounds so full of "despair" . I know they are in a desperate situation but there is some happier moments but still the tone of despair never ceases. saying all of that I still rate it very highly and will by the third the moment available.

Good second book

The story didn't go the way I expected, but it didn't stop my enjoyment. Overall I thought it was very good, although I do find Emma annoying. As with the first book, the narrator was excellent. Looking forward to the final installment

Good yarn but parts felt familiar

For a sequel, this wasn’t too bad of a listen. Some of it felt too drawn out. Some of it felt like I was listening to Expeditionary Force. Arthur could be Skippy’s twin. The Narrator for Emma needs to do some work on her British accent. It was... just odd. Like Brightwell was a geordie, went to a posh public school and lost the accent but kept the pronunciation. Odd.

It’s a shame but I don’t think I care enough about any of them to bother with book 3.
