Summary
Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Terror by Dan Simmons, read by Tom Sellwood.
Stephen King hailed Dan Simmons' bestselling novel as 'a brilliant, massive combination of history and supernatural horror' and it's now a chilling 10-part AMC Original TV series from Ridley Scott.
The most advanced scientific enterprise ever mounted, Sir John Franklin’s 1845 expedition in search of the fabled North-West Passage had every expectation of triumph.
But for almost two years his ships HMS Terror and Erebus have been trapped in the Arctic ice. Supplies of fuel and food are running low. Scurvy, starvation and even madness beging to take their toll. And yet the real threat isn’t from the constantly shifting, alien landscape, the flesh-numbing temperatures or being crushed by the unyielding, frozen ocean. No, the real threat is far more terrifying.
There is something out there in the frigid darkness. It stalks the ships and snatches men. It is a nameless thing. At once nowhere and everywhere, this terror has become the expedition’s nemesis...
Critic reviews
"Simmons has created a chilling supernatural novel...the horrific trials of their impending icy deaths are vividly brought to life." (Daily Express)
"A brilliant, massive combination of history and supernatural horror." (STEPHEN KING)

Excellent but...
Huge book, excellent acting, as others say, a little confused over all, would have been better focusing on one genre, historical would be my vote, horror aspect okay though not fully realised, cultural aspect misses the mark.
But so huge, so well researched, so absorbing, five stars anyway.

Terror it is not
This is an amazing work of fact/fiction narrated in such a remarkable way. Read it before watching the AMC production.

Not what I expected from the title
Good story but not what I expected from the title. A little slow at the end.

Not bad, bit predictable
This book starts out as a kind of horror. It’s a blend of history, legend and tribal traditions very like the red Indians in essence. you have to suspend belief a bit towards the end. It might be just the amount of horrors I’ve read or not but I found the book predictable. The cliche stereotypes of villains and so on were tedious. I think it is possible to see for myself who the bad guys are without having them spoon fed to me by appearance and accent. That said it’s worth a read. The narration is excellent if the accents vary sometimes so that one person might speak in two different ways. If I have a criticism it would be that it’s a mite over-edited in places so that the performance sounds rushed. The pauses should be longer but that apart you might think it worth wasting a credit on. Not sure about the language though. Words like ‘attop’ and ‘tarp’ are not or were not I think in common use during this time frame and in Britain still are not. Research, well not sure. there is a bit of info dumping going on but the book has pace and there’s always something happening right up to the end almost.

Better than expected
I purchased this book to use as a background while working on my computer. It was long and seemed interesting. From the start I was engaged with the story helped by the good narration. Thoroughly enjoyed it and amazed the 28 hours went as quick as they did.

Amazing book and amazing rendition
Wonderful. I've listened to this book several times and it's just perfect. The delivery is impeccable.
The only way it would be improved is if it was read by the cast of the Tv show... but that's just how good this book is.

Brrrrr!
The cold is as implacable foe as the monster that hunts the Franklin expedition. Horror doesn’t get much better than this.
Narration was good.

A marathon but worth it
An epic yarn on the vividly described Arctic ice. I felt the men’s fear and cold, was intrigued by the way of life and found the characters strongly delineated enough to care about them. It held my attention for nearly 30 hours with its variety and the narrator’s skilled recreation of the voices. Thoroughly recommended.

slow in some parts, TERRIFYING in others!
overall, I loved this book. the narrator was fab. It can drag its heels a little in some parts, and delve into the past to tell long stories- ( if you've ever read a long Stephen King novel then you'll get what I mean). But the characters and we'll written and some parts of this book are really scary. Everyone should read this book, you'll learn a bit of history and be entertained!
