About this listen

Once upon a time, a girl found a magical puppy, and her life was never the same again.

Nina Popoca needs help.

So, so much of it.

The only place she can find that help is on a sprawling ranch in Colorado. A place hiding more than a community filled with magical creatures trying to live their lives in safety and in peace. A village that might hold the answers to questions she’s had her entire life.

And if that ranch is owned by her best friend’s hunky cousin?

There are worse things in the world than having to live right by Henri Blackrock.

I was so excited when Marianna announced that her book had come to audio. I'm glad to say that it didn't disappoint

The narrators brought the story to life.

I can’t imagine anyone not liking this book. As Duncan would say: love, love, love.
Narration is stunning.

Quite different from her usual, but still felt very much like MZ. Slooooowest of slow burns and loveable characters! Great narration

Mariana does it again!

Slow burn QUEEN!

Full of love and low stakes urban fantasy
Lots of found family and acceptance
Never bored bit the conflict level both between characters and in story plot could easily have been higher

4.5 - a long loving hug

I adore this book. The witt, emotions and overall experience of this book makes me crave more from this enchanting world. The narration brings this book to life in a way that it makes you feel like a part of it. A big thank you to all who worked to bring this book to life. I know it will stay with me and probably become one of my absolute favorite of all time. A few quotes I ritten down from this book is now what greets everyone that comes into my home.

I read the book and was left with mixed feelings. I could nt wait to try the audio version. And I was not disappointed. The narrators really brought the story to life. Their voices were perfect!!! Mariana is amazing at creating emotional journeys. Exploring a sense of belonging. Her love for dogs shines through in this book, and, as a dog lover myself it really spoke to me; about the beautiful unconditional love we can share with dogs. Someone described the book as a long loving hug. That sums it up perfectly to me. Thank you to all involved.♡

This story follows Nina, a thirty-year-old woman who finds herself a mom/guardian to a magical puppy who can't hide his differences—and that pulls her to a ranch in Colorado full of magical people, hidden danger, fantastical creatures, and her best friends cousin a grumpy, stoic love interest named Henri Blackrock.

I'm torn. This book is Marianas first dip into a fantasy instead of her usual contemporary works and while there are definitely elements i enjoyed and that felt like quintessential Mariana, overall the essence of what usually makes one of her reads resonate with me on a deep level was missing. The connection I usually feel with/towards her characters and their relationships never fully formed as it has with previous books of hers and I never reached the point of feeling fully connected to or immersed in the story.

Both Nina & Henri were interesting and likeable characters and the story has a cosy urban fantasy setting, low stakes magic, supernatural/mythical beings and a dash of mystery all woven together. But whatever it is that makes a MZ book a MZ book for me never materialised. The story overall was good, I liked it, but that bone deep connection and the feelings I get watching the main couple long and yern for each other was missing.

Both narrators were new to me, I liked and enjoyed both of their performances and I'm aware what I'm about to say is a me thing... but man I missed Callie Dalton voicing the FMC in this one. Victoria Villarreal was great, absolutely nothing wrong with her performance at all and I would definitely listen to more work by her... but I associate Callie with Marianas audiobooks and I feel the way Callie usually delivers the quirky/sassy humour MZs FMC's display works SO well that I genuinely missed it here. But like I said that is probably just a me thing.

Overall this was a good read, I liked it and if there weren't other MZ books that I'd rated a 4⭐️ already this would be closer to that mark it think but alas there ARE other books of hers that I've loved with that rating and this one doesn't quite match up. 🤷‍♀️ I think it is definitely worth a read/listen if you are already a MZ fan but it isn't the book I would recommend newbies to her work start with.

3.5⭐️

It felt like alot of repetitive sentences, themes and situations, all for the sake of making it a slow burner. I went through about 7 of her other books one after another and loved them but this just fell flat for me.

Disappointing unfortunately

In my opinion, this book was a little messy. There wasn't much of a storyline and the fantasy element was a little weird. I LOVE Mariana Zapata, she is the slowburn queen, however in this book, I genuinely didn't care for Henri and Nina!

Not for me
