Summary
Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive. The events that followed changed her life forever.
Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance programmer, she works at home designing sophisticated security systems. Her own security is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.
The mystery of Abigail Lowery intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and a professional level. Her sharp, logical mind, her secretive nature, her unromantic viewpoints leave him fascinated but frustrated. He suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, even if he doesn’t know what - and that her elaborate defenses hide a story that must be revealed.
Accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, Gleason is about to walk into the sights of very powerful and dangerous men. And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Hooked
Loved the whole premise of this story. Especially the character Liz and the way her mind processed situations. Also very good narration. Highly recommend.

Gripping story
Beautifully told story of courage of young girl who fled a murder scene and kept running until she fell in love with a man she could trust to help her bring the perpetrators to justice. As a heroine she was utterly believable. The reader took us into a vividly drawn narrative that kept the tension going until end.

The Witness by Nora Roberts
This is the second Nora Roberts book I've listened to and I found the character development and emotional interplay between the main characters interesting and believable. Julia Whelan is a good narrator and is very good at bringing the personalities of the different people alive - it was very easy to distinguish who was 'in play' at any one time by how she read their words. Having been brought up on Hollywood blockbusters I suppose I was expecting a more climatic end to the thriller side of the plot but the fact that I cared about the characters and wanted the best for them means, for me, that I found a book engaging despite any possible flaws. I would characterise her books as slightly Mills and Boonish in that the romance is the central point but the sub-plots are so well developed that this is only a passing criticism. Having listened to two of her books, one read by a female and one by a male, I would always choose a female voice for her books - it just seems to fit better for me as a female listener.
