About this listen

London, 1889. Jack the Ripper’s reign of terror is finally over, but a new one is just beginning…. In the late Victorian era, as many as 96 bodies a month are pulled from the Thames, the majority of them with their throats slit. The broken body of a Scotland Yard detective is found in a steamer trunk, his eyes and lips sewn shut. Inspector Walter Day's first assignment is to catch the killer.

The Yard - A slow burner

Although set in 1889, for me it didn't have enough of a Victorian feel to it. Yes it had believable characters from all levels of society, intertwining plots and some humorous moments but it just lacked "something'. The novel moved along at a steady pace but I had to re read some chapters as my mind had wandered now and again because it hadn't held my full attention.

I didn't find it gory or much influenced by Jack the Ripper lore and it did included a small amount of prostitution but on the whole nothing too sensational.

The characters weren't too deep or complex and the baddies were easily spotted. Christopher Saul did do an outstanding job on bringing them to life.

I will spend another credit on the second book of the series to see if it picks up more :)

Thoroughly enjoyable and well performed

Equal parts fun and disturbing. Well researched to reflect the period. Highly recommended for crime fans.

A good listen.

A good light read, nothing to in depth. The story is good and entertaining, would appeal to Sherlock Holmes fans. The only criticism I would make is that some of the characters had very modern mind sets, but I suppose that can't be avoided as its a modern book.

Excellent novel but no surprises

Would you listen to The Yard again? Why?

I did enjoy the story immensely, it was not unnecessarily complicated as some authors like to only pull the various threads together at the very end of the book. Here one always knew what what one getting which was fine, however, some twist at the end of would have been appreciated.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Yard?

The Narrator is brilliant, however, I can only find one other book for him...Give this man a job someone !!!

Have you listened to any of Christopher Saul’s other performances? How does this one compare?

See above....

Okay but frustrating, not going to finish it

I'm one of those oddities who enjoys playing the audiobook while simultaneously reading along with the hard copy. In this instance, it was a very frustrating experience, because the narrator appears to be reading from a very different version of the novel. Possibly, copy went to the audio producers prior to the publication of the fully edited hardback edition (which I have)? But whatever the reason, before the end of the second chapter, I'd already had to stumble over no less than 10 "errors" -- different terms used in the book vs audio, entire sentences and segments elided, some sentences switched around, and several moments of the sound dipping out entirely.

I found it hard to care about the characters or to form any attachment to the narrative and storyline. Possibly this is all due to the poor audio experience, so I will give the novel a second chance by just reading the book in the old fashioned way.

I will not be finishing w/ the audio, though. It is being returned.

Recommended

It’s a long book and well read lots of twists and turns all neatly and plausibly resolved. The reader is excellent and every character has a voice. It is a bit macabre in places but such incidents are dealt with in a matter if fact way by the author and the reader.
A fascinating glimpse into life in London at that time
