About this listen

One of Agatha Christie’s most loved mysteries, Evil Under the Sun remains one of her best and most delightfully cryptic murder mysteries ever, read by Poirot himself – David Suchet.

It was not unusual to find the beautiful bronzed body of the sun-loving Arlena Stuart stretched out on a beach, face down. Only, on this occasion, there was no sun… she had been strangled.

Ever since Arlena’s arrival at the resort, Hercule Poirot had detected sexual tension in the seaside air. But could this apparent ‘crime of passion’ have been something more evil and premeditated altogether?

Amazing narator!

The narator is absolutely brilliant! It's incredible how he can switch from a character to another, it's mesmerising! The book itself if also amazing, Agatha was a true Queen of Crime !

OK

Shame Hugh Fraser hadn’t narrated this. I haven’t seen more than a few minutes in passing of the TV adaptations with David Suchet and HF, so I don’t have any preconception that HF is “only” the dim stooge to DS.
DS makes many voices comic, exaggerated, even for light fiction like this. Still I don’t like much of the current ultra-violent crime fiction, especially as bedtime listening. Far better a sanitised assassination of an unpleasant person with a minimum of gore.

Certainly a book to take on holiday

A classic Hercule Poirot mystery, though not the best, still thoroughly enjoyable as a Christie romp. The island setting, the close circle of suspects and the central mysterious death. It’s a wonderful puzzle, great entertainment, and it’s great to hear David Suchet lending the voice of the true Poirot to this story. Loved it. Been a Christie fan since I was a kid and always enjoy a great mystery of hers. Roll on the next one!

Sun, sea and murder - what more do you need?

A well known book by Agatha Christie which has been dramatised on TV as well as film. While on holiday Hercule Poirot encounters death and mystery when wealthy actress Arlena Marshall is discovered dead on beach on their holiday island. Through a series of deduction Poirot examines the possible suspects amongst them are; the forgiving husband, downtrodden and bullied step-daughter, wife of the man Arlena is ‘secretly’ dating or maybe the reverend who sees evil around her.

Having read the book before and watched the various dramatisations many times, the events and big reveal was of no surprise however this did not detract from my enjoyment of listening to this audiobook. A particular joy of this reading was the performance of the brilliant David Suchet who will always be ‘Hercule Poirot’ to me despite others who may come along.
