About this listen

"And see if there's any news about the missing girl."

Life, as Smith used to say, is just one thing after another - as one investigation ends, a new one begins. But for reasons unknown to the rest of her team, DCI Cara Freeman will be haunted by the next case for the Kings Lake Central murder squad. They find themselves delving into the seamy side of life in the town, and one of their number will have departed before this new investigation is over. Perhaps Detective Sergeant Chris Waters should have seen it coming, but he has a lot more than work on his mind these days.

Fantastic book. Great narrator. Fabulous characters. Just love this series and the way the characters are building up forming such wonderful relationships.

Great storyline

I Love these books. The original DC Smith books are still my favourite but i really enjoy this spin off series with Smith's young protégé growing in confidence and settling in with his new boss. The narration is excellent and the whole story flows well with plenty of detection, nothing to grizzly or psychologically disturbing, just good logical working things out. The plot is good and well layed out. I was dissappointed when Smith retired and didnt think i would be interested in stories from the same police department but i was wrong. I cant wait for the next one in the series.

A good spin off series

Expertly developed narrative featuring a well drawn cast of varied and believable characters. I love the whole series.

A gripping story

I would recommend starting with the DC Smith series first, to immerse yourself in the characters, but the narration is second to none and I finish each book with a sense of loss because it is over.

It doesn’t get much better than this

Yet another great story

A predictable tale but beautifully read with characters who hold interest. Cliched in parts but I didn’t mind that as I was absorbed all the way through

I love his characters

Peter Grainger has to be one of my favourite writers. His tales are so very believable and well informed that you are pulled away from the mundane world and into his . Its not glamorous or pretty but you feel a liking for the characters.

very convincingly written beautifully read

The plot unfolded at a steady pace and the expectation that a client was the murderer seemed inevitable. Each of the team delivered their piece of the puzzle. The personal stories of characters ran alongside the main theme giving added texture. An excellent story.

Good Characterisation.
